Annie Schindel, Chappell Roan Co-Writer, on How ‘Red Wine Supernova’ ‘Opened Every Door’

Five years ago, Annie Schindel co-wrote ‘Red Wine Supernova’ with Chappell Roan – now she’s collaborating with heroes like Halsey and Ellie Goulding.

When Annie Schindel walked into a blind writing session in 2019, the then-teenager had no idea the track she co-wrote that day — Chappell Roan‘s campy, glitter-pop anthem “Red Wine Supernova” — would erupt into a viral, and then chart, sensation four years later. She just knew it was good. So good, in fact, that it earned the budding songwriter, now 25, a BMI Award and opened doors to collaborate with the very artists who once inspired her to pick up a guitar.

“Deep down we all were stoked about this song,” Schindel recalls. “It felt so fun and cathartic and uninhibited.” It took a while for that feeling to be vindicated, but then Roan changed labels, dropped several singles and her debut album, and unexpectedly became the breakout artist of 2024. After “Hot to Go” and “Good Luck, Babe!” caught fire, “Red Wine Supernova” — which she cowrote with Chappell, producer Daniel Nigro, Lisa Hickox and Amy Kuney — was next. “It opened every door,” she says. “One song from five years ago gave me everything.”

That includes recent collaborations with pop powerhouses Halsey and Ellie Goulding, two sessions she still pinches herself over. “‘How am I in the room with Halsey? How am I in the room with Ellie Goulding?’” she marvels aloud. “Life was so different for me two years ago.” For Schindel, her success isn’t just a feel-good story about an old demo turned streaming smash — it’s the payoff of a deeply personal and, at times, painful journey.

Schindel began writing songs in her bedroom as a teenager, singing along to the Chicks and Taylor Swift, imagining a future as a recording artist. But the path she envisioned took an unexpected turn when, in her late teens, her health began to falter. The Los Angeles native was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a genetic connective tissue disorder, which later triggered a cascade of autoimmune complications.

“My dream was to write and tell people’s stories and have a hit — and then I’m in a hospital,” she says. At the height of her illness, she was doing just one session every couple of months, which hampered her growth and momentum as a songwriter. “It’s hard to tell all these publishers, ‘Hey, you should totally sign me. By the way, I’m going to be in and out of the hospital for the next two years, probably not working.’”

But the publisher that did sign her, Livelihood, never wavered. “They sent me more flowers than my family members did,” Schindel laughs. “I’m feeling the best I’ve felt in a really long time.” Her return to health coincided with a surge in opportunities. The momentum of “Red Wine Supernova” — and the unwavering support of her team — landed her in the room with some of her musical heroes.

Working with Halsey, who also lives with Ehlers-Danlos, was particularly meaningful. “She’s incredible,” Schindel says. “Of course I talked about my health with her, and she’s obviously going through it as well, and I feel so seen and heard by her.” On a Saturday morning in the Hollywood Hills, the two bonded over their shared experiences. “There was almost just this mutual pride for each other,” Schindel says. “It was just lovely.”

Collaborating with Ellie Goulding was another surreal moment. “I was like, ‘Annie, be cool. You belong here. Be cool,’” she laughs. “I was so happy that she was as kind and funny and human as she was.” Throughout her rise, Schindel has found herself drawn to bold, distinctive female voices such as Lyn Lapid, Towa Bird and Renee Rapp. “They have so much to say,” she says. “I think that’s really what I gravitate towards, someone with intention and a story and identity.”

Schindel says it’s been a conscious decision to work with as many women as possible in a still male-dominated industry. “More and more I am finding that I’m not the only female in the room, but I’ll still go weeks where it’s just men,” she says. “I love my male collaborators, but when you’re trying to write from a female perspective, there’s just an understanding of life experience.”

She cites top songwriters like Grammy 2025 songwriter of the year Amy Allen, Julia Michaels, and Ali Tamposi as inspirations. “Their contributions to pop music have changed my life and made me want to be a better woman and songwriter,” she says. Though she hasn’t ruled out an artist project, she now finds the most joy in telling other people’s stories. “I’ll always have an artist project sitting there, but for right now, writing is where my heart is and where my body is as well.”

One breakout hit may have opened doors, but Schindel knows that longevity requires consistency. “One song doing well is a mix of luck and hard work,” she says. “But when you get more than one under your belt, it isn’t just luck and hard work, it’s talent.” With a slate of credits on the horizon, Schindel is well on her way. “I definitely feel like I’ve got a lot to prove, but it’s the most excited and hopeful I’ve ever felt.”
