Paradise City and Cor Cordium are producing an animated documentary about the life of Fredy Hirsch who led children’s programming in the death camps.

Paradise City, the production company run by Emilie Georges and Naima Abed, is set to make an animated documentary about the life of Fredy Hirsch, the German Jewish and gay prisoner who led children’s programming in Terezin and Auschwitz. BIFA-nominee Tom C J Brown (“Christopher at Sea”) will direct the feature.
Paradise City, which is based in London and Paris, will produce “The Fredy Hirsch Story” (working title), alongside “Nomadland”‘s Oscar-winning producer Peter Spears through his company Cor Cordium, and Emmy-nominee Maor Azran (“Buried”).
The project marks Paradise City’s first foray into the animation space, and a reunion for producers Spears, Georges, Abed who previously collaborated on Luca Guadagnino’s Oscar-nominated “Call Me By Your Name” and most recently on Anthony Chen’s “Drift,” starring Cynthia Erivo.
The doc will feature original research conducted by Jody Becker, a New York Times editor who first uncovered Hirsch’s story in the early 1990s as a Prague-based reporter, and it will also include historic audio interviews of Holocaust survivors. Hirsch’s niece Rachel Masel will consult with the team.
“It’s an extraordinary privilege to bring Fredy’s story to life, and animation provides a unique opportunity to portray this larger-than-life personality on the silver screen,” says Brown. “Fredy understood the importance of more than just basic necessities for the children under his care; he believed in surrounding them with poetry.”
Brown said he saw it as “his mission to protect the children, to bring them art, music, and song, and to create a world of imagination and wonder.”
The film will bring to life the magical world that Fredy Hirsch created for Jewish children, first in Prague under the Nuremberg Laws, and later as a prisoner in the concentration camps of Terezin and Auschwitz.
“We have been deeply moved by discovering this story, unknown to us,” say Georges and Abed. “Falling in love with Tom CJ Brown’s work, we know he possesses the ability to convey the sophisticated language and subtle poetry necessary to translate this profoundly human tale onto the screen. We’re thrilled to collaborate again with Peter Spears and to contribute to craft this beautiful film for audiences worldwide.”
Brown is a British artist and filmmaker who is primarily known for his short films “Christopher at Sea” in 2022, and “Teeth” in 2015. He’s won accolades from festivals around the world including Sundance, SXSW, Outfest, Annecy, and BIFA nominated.
