Belgium cinema projector developer Barco is launching its HDR by Barco premium cinema tech into India.
The company has inked a pair of deals that will bring at least 80 HDR by Barco laser projectors to cinemas in India, followed by Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, by 2030. Additionally, Prasad Film Labs in Chennai has opened India’s first HDR color grading theater to be equipped with the Barco projector, aimed at production and post for both local and international productions.
The new facility is equipped with the Barco by HDR projector, a 51 ft. screen and FilmLight’s Baselight 6 color grading system. Services will include HDR color grading, mastering and creation of deliverables for cinema or home entertainment. “As the oldest postproduction facility in India, we have consistently strived to bring the latest and greatest innovations from the global cinema landscape to India. HDR by Barco is one such technology—an obvious choice for us to adopt and introduce to the Indian cinema industry. … This facility, which was once a large recording theatre, is now an entirely new build,” said Prasad CTO Abhishek Prasad.
A multiyear deal with Qube Cinema will bring at least 10 premium cinemas to the region, each year for the next five years. Additionally, The Digital Infra (TDI) has a strategic agreement with the cinema tech developer to deploy up to 30 premium cinema screens in India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh by 2027.
The first projector through the Qube deal will be at Hyderabad’s AMB Cinemas, which is scheduled to open July 27. AMB Cinemas is a partnership between Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu Garu and Asian Cinemas, led by Suniel Narang and Barath Narang. Said Qube CEO Harsh Rohatgi, “When we experienced their latest Lightsteering technology, we realized that it would help both filmmakers to offer, and viewers to enjoy, a premium visual presentation of movies in HDR. … We are happy to have our longstanding exhibitor partner Asian Cinemas join us on this journey and launch this technology at three of their upcoming screens in India.”
The first intallation in the TDI deal will be at Sri Melody Theatre in Vizag, also opening this summer. “This venue is an ideal showcase outside the U.S. and UK for such a breakthrough format, giving Indian audiences access to a superior cinematic experience with enhanced brightness, deep black levels, and remarkable on-screen impact,” said TDI director Kamalakannan Duraikannu.
Following U.S. and UK launches, India will be the third country to adopt Barco’s new HDR projector, according to Barco Cinema executive vice president Gerwin Damberg, who adds that participants look forward to “bringing premium high-dynamic range presentation to theaters through the region.”
Upcoming titles that are scheduled to be mastered and released in the format include Universal’s “How to Train Your Dragon” and “Jurassic World Rebirth,” and Sony’s “Karate Kid: Legends” and “28 Years Later.”
