The India-set mother-daughter dramedy, which Singh wrote, directed, produced and stars in, has been selected for Tribeca’s International Narrative Competition. The pic marks the first Indian film to compete in the section in three years.
Singh plays Maitri, a travel vlogger living with her traditional mother Shobha (Geeta Agrawal) in a tight-knit apartment complex. When an incident during a community pilgrimage gets swept under the rug, the mother-daughter duo must confront the emotional aftermath in a claustrophobic reckoning with truth, tradition, and the price of silence.
The filmmaker, a USC School of Cinematic Arts grad now based in Los Angeles, brings a darkly comic sensibility to weighty subject matter. “In telling this story, I wanted to make a big deal out of what society often dismisses as ‘small,’” Singh said. “There’s a darker version of this film, but I leaned into comedy and energy to spark conversation – and to reflect the absurdity of silence around assault. ‘Pinch’ doesn’t pretend to have answers. It insists on the questions.”
Supporting cast includes Sunita Rajwar (“Santosh”), Sapna Sand, Badri Chavan, Rajiv Neema, Jahnvi Marathe and Nitish Pandey.
Singh previously helmed award-winning short “Fanny Pack,” which played at over 45 festivals worldwide.
The pic was lensed on location in Indore, India, with cinematography by Adam Linzey (“The Animal Thing”), who also co-wrote the screenplay. Natasha Leonnet (“La La Land,” “Hidden Figures”) handled color grading, while Madhusudan N. (“Stree”) designed production.
Music comes from Raashi Kulkarni (“A Nice Indian Boy,” “Wedding Season”), with sound design by Jan Bezouska (“Midway,” “They Cloned Tyrone”). Costume design is by Dipika Lal (“Last Days,” “Jawan”), with editing by Faroukh Virani, Louise Innes and Vanessa Ruane.
Producers are Faissal Sam Shaib (“Arzé,” “Wyrm”), Jenna Cavelle (“Mr. Crocket,” “Young.Wild.Free.”), Jan Bezouska, Anirudh Singh, Akanksha Jain, Pranav Soni, Muktesh Singh, Suneeta Singh and Singh herself.
