B.J. Penn’s mother files for restraining order against UFC legend, claims ‘extreme psychological abuse’
B.J. Penn’s mother filed for a restraining order against her son in court on Tuesday alleging that the UFC legend has used “extreme psychological abuse” while detailing his two recent arrests.
B.J. Penn’s mother Lorraine Shin has filed for a restraining order against her son after the UFC legend was arrested twice in the past two days for abuse of a family or household member.
On Tuesday, MMA Fighting received a copy of the request for a restraining order that Shin filed with the courts along with her statement of events that led to Penn’s arrest. The request was just filed so a judge hasn’t approved or denied the order yet.
In the statement provided to authorities, Shin identifies Penn as her son while detailing the allegations against him.
Shin claims that Penn has used “extreme psychological abuse towards me for over the past several months that I am not Lorraine Shin, I killed his family and have taken over his mother’s identity, and he wants me to be removed from his home.”
Penn posted on his Instagram with an alert to the Hilo Police Department stating “I need your help. My mother Lorraine Shin, my brother Jay Dee Penn, my brother, Reagan Penn and my brother Kalani Mamazuka we’re all murdered and I need you to investigate these guys get these people out of my house and my off my properties.”
In the request for the restraining order, Shin alleges that she returned home from a trip on May 11 and found “all my belongings such as clothes, shoes, jewelry, personal items, and my bed removed from my bedroom.” After Penn allegedly denied knowing where his mother’s belongings were at, Shin filed a theft report with police.
A few days later on May 16, Shin claims “my personal purse with my driver’s license, credit card and locks for my safe were stolen” and she made a separate theft report. Shin says Penn allegedly told her that “all the items in the safe were his.”
Shin says she then installed a dead bolt lock on her bedroom door along with security cameras both inside and outside the home. She claims Penn was caught taking down the cameras and “he also put glue into my dead bolts that stopped me from opening my bedroom door.”
She called police and claims Penn was told not to remove her cameras and denied putting glue in the dead bolt lock.
On May 25, Shin says she once again returned home from a weekend trip and found that Penn allegedly “placed duct tape on my video cameras to block video camera and placed glue into my deadbolt on my bedroom door to stop me from entering my bedroom.”
Shin claims her son Reagan Penn climbed into the bedroom from an outside window to unlock the door so she could gain entry. She then claims that she checked her mailbox and there was nothing inside from the past few days she was gone on her trip and Shin says she asked Penn took the mail.
Shin says Penn denied taking her mail but then later that night she found her son inside a friend’s vehicle and claims she saw her mail in the backseat. She claims Penn denied it was her mail and that led to Shin contacting the police again.
Shin claims that Penn allegedly shoved a bright flashlight into her face to prevent her from dialing the number for police on her cell phone .
“I tried turning in several directions and he continued to blind me with his flashlight,” Shin wrote. “I then tried to grab the flashlight and remove it from my face and then he grabbed my arms and shoved me against the 4-door gray sedan, which I felt a sharp pain in my back. I then started to scream at the top of my voice for my son Reagan Penn to help me.
“Reagan lives two houses away from me. Reagan ran over to help me. I then dialed 911 for help.”
Shin says Penn was then arrested and “given 48 hours” to stay away from her home.
The next morning, Shin claims she was upstairs when she heard a noise downstairs and when she went to investigation, she noticed one of her sliding glass doors was open.
Shin says as she was walking towards the back entrance door to the house she spotted Penn “bolting from the rear stairs to exit the back door.” She claims Penn jumped in the same car with his friend and left.
Shin says she later heard Penn arguing with her son Reagan at his home when police were called again. She says she showed police the video of Penn entering and exiting her home in violation of the 48-hour period and he was arrested again.
“I believe my son [B.J. Penn] is suffering from Capgras delusional syndrome (a psychiatric disorder in which a person holds a delusion that a friend, spouse, parent, other close family member has been replaced by an identical imposter). He believes I’m an imposter who has killed his family to gain control of the family assets.
“In the best interest for my safety, I ask the court for a six month [temporary restraining order] and have my son ordered to get medical treatment or other source of therapy.”
A search of online records in Hawaii shows that Penn has several legal cases outstanding, including a civil lawsuit as well as a separate restraining order that was approved by a judge to keep the ex-UFC fighter away from a woman and two minor children.
Outside of a video that Penn posted to his Instagram account showing his initial arrest on May 25, he hasn’t publicly addressed the allegations against him or the restraining order request filed by his mother.
Penn, 46, is widely regarded as one of the greatest fighters of all-time with championship reigns in two different weight classes in the UFC. He last fought in 2019 when he suffered a seventh straight defeat in the UFC, which prompted his exit from the promotion.
