The last time the Oklahoma City Thunder made an NBA Finals, its 2025 MVP (Shai Gilgeous-Alexander) was in ninth grade, and paint protector Chet Holmgren was 10 years old. Granted, 2012 was not all that long ago — only 11 of the other 29 franchises have reached the final round since then. Rather, it’s a reflection on just how young this Thunder core is. Gilgeous-Alexander is 26 years old, Jalen Williams turned 24 last month and Holmgren hit the age of 23 on May 1.

The Minnesota Timberwolves, a tenacious team that dominated Game 3 and took Game 4 to the brink, stand in the way of the Thunder advancing to the Finals. Unlike OKC, the Wolves have never played on the league’s biggest stage. To do so in 2025, they’ll have to win three straight against the field’s top-seeded team. But don’t rule out further history-making in these thoroughly unpredictable playoffs.
After three decisive victories for the respective home sides, Game 4 gave us down-to-the-wire action. Gilgeous-Alexander had 40 points on 30 shots, while Anthony Edwards and Julius Randle combined for 21 points. Minnesota was able to hang around because of its depth — Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Donte DiVincenzo each hit five 3s off the bench, and Jaden McDaniels had an efficient 22 points plus four steals.
Oklahoma City won because of the clutch work of its second and third options. Holmgren is now 55 percent from the floor this series, and Williams is averaging a 23/6/4 line with 2.3 steals and 50 percent 3-point shooting.
It’s been a collective effort overall. Mark Daigneault has gone with a nine-player rotation in all four games and 10 players have seen the court in three of the four games.
Expect OKC to once again go small down the stretch. Cason Wallace has the rotation’s best offensive rating in the series, and Alex Caruso has been indispensable on defense. SGA’s heavy usage is inevitable, but Williams has frequently looked like a world-beater on both ends. He’ll have a green (or blue? or orange?) light for a home knockout game.
For Minnesota to extend the proceedings and force a Game 6, Chris Finch and company must hope for fewer turnovers. The Timberwolves had 23 giveaways during Monday’s tough loss and just 10 in Saturday’s blowout win. Despite the series deficit, Minnesota is winning two of the four factors through four games, and it trails on free-throw rate by less than one percentage point. Turnover rate has been the Timberwolves’ real problem, and the underdogs now need to maximize every extra possession against this steely, droning defense.
McDaniels and Alexander-Walker have been spectacular in these Western Conference finals. Edwards, just 23 years old, has a chance to engineer a career-defining comeback. And Randle, still scrapping for postseason redemption, can become an instant Minnesota legend with elevated play in the eleventh hour. Game 5 will answer old questions, then prompt new ones.
