World Cupdate: Heavy hitters make World Cup semis

When the dust settled after 240 minutes of World Cup semifinals (plus stoppage time) yesterday, England and Argentina had joined Spain and France in the final four. It’s as marquee a semifinal crop as possible, and two Saturday escapes made it possible.

England’s 2-1 win over Norway in extra timewas another entry in this tournament’s collection of chaotic games. “Feels-like” 99-degree temperatures in Miami preceded both Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham being subbed off in extra time, exhausted. England fell down 1-0 and were outplayed for long stretches. But the Three Lions got two Bellingham goals that might convince even a cynic that, for the first time since 1966, it could be coming home:

  • The first goal came after a live ball appeared to hit the camera suspended on wire above the field. In that event, the referee should’ve stopped the play, but FIFA says its motion-tracking tech did not reveal the ball touched anything in mid-air. Hmm.
  • Bellingham’s winner was a Norwegian calamity, as keeper Ørjan Nyland misplayed a fairly routine shot and coughed up a perfect rebound to England’s unimpeded star.

Later,Argentina beat Switzerland 3-1in extra time. This onelookedlike it would be a cruise after Argentina went up in the 10th minute. But the Swiss mounted a vigorous push early in the second half, punctuated by Dan Ndoye’s tying goal on a give-and-go run in the 67th minute. Then came the mess:

  • A yellow card on Argentina’s Leandro Paredes became a VAR-assisted yellow on Switzerland’s Breel Embolo for embellishment. It was his second yellow, leaving Embolo in tears, Switzerland down to 10 men and perhaps a few billion people mad that FIFA had intervened to help Lionel Messi’s side at a moment when they were rattled. (My own perfectly triangulated take: It was a flop, but this amount of VAR is exhausting.)
  • A man up, Argentina took back control, but the stubborn Swiss refused to yield until deep into extra time. Penalties were coming.
  • Until they weren’t. Julián Alvarez scored a beauty in the 112th minute, getting Argentina off the hook yet again. Lautaro Martinez provided insurance in the closing seconds.

Cape Verde, Egypt and Switzerland have now all brought Messi’s side to within a few inches of death.Still, Argentina play on.

So, here’s your semifinal slate:France-Spain on Tuesday in North Texas, England-Argentina on Wednesday in Atlanta. There’s not a major underdog in the fold here. All four teams are amazing. Still, there are weaknesses to exploit. I asked Phil Hay, author ofthe must-read Athletic FC newsletter:What is the most evident Achilles’ heel for each of the four?

  • Argentina:that Messi goes off the boil, or finds himself in a game where he’s too peripheral to wave his magic wand. If you’re going to have a player carry you like this, he can’t ever not show up.
  • England:Thomas Tuchel’s defense. As a full unit, England are incredibly difficult to beat (they so often find a way), but they’ve been giving away chances in the knockouts, and more than a few decent ones. Messi would love some of that.
  • France:Jules Kounde at right back. Get at Kounde down that flank, dominate possession and pray for Rodri to have a stormer against attacking midfielder Michael Olise, and I can see Spain taking the French down.
  • Spain:their goal scoring. This sounds counterintuitive because they haven’t really struggled for goals, but they also haven’t played a team on anything like France’s level. As prolific as striker Mikel Oyarzabal is, they still don’t feel truly world-class at nine.

Thanks to Phil. What a tournament.
