Harry Kane believes there is still “another level” to come from England as they prepare for their World Cup semi-final against Argentina on Wednesday.
England ground out another difficult win at this tournament on Saturday night, needing extra-time to beat Norway 2-1 in Miami. Thomas Tuchel criticised the performance, saying that England were “sloppy” and “lucky”.
And England captain Kane said afterwards that the team can still improve ahead of the final four game in Atlanta but that the national team should make sure to enjoy the achievement of reaching the semis for just the fourth time ever.
“We know we can improve and we know we can play better,” Kane said. “Ultimately we are in a semi-final of the World Cup and that has not always been the case for this national team so we have to enjoy it. We need to take that in.”
Kane hailed the spirit and togetherness of a team who bounced back from being a goal down against DR Congo, beat Mexico in the Estadio Azteca with ten men, and then came from behind again to beat Norway.
“We still showed a lot of great things, things you need to be a successful team with our desire and determination, the way everybody puts their bodies on the line for the nation,” Kane said. “It was tough out there with the heat and humidity. We can play better on the ball, we know that. But right now we want to enjoy this. The preparation will come for the next game. And we will try to improve with the ball as much as possible.”
Tuchel’s post-match criticism of England raised some eyebrows — and led to a riposte from Jude Bellingham — but Kane said the head coach is just trying to get the team to play to their potential.
“(Tuchel) sees us train and sees the closeness of us and sees what we can do, especially with the players we have, the way we attack, our one-on-ones and the skills,” Kane said. “He just wants to see that version of us. He knows as much as anyone that it’s not as simple as that, we’re playing against good opposition and good teams. He’s trying to drag it out of us and we know ourselves we have another level that we can reach.”
This is the fourth major semi-final that Kane has been involved with, after England lost at this stage in the 2018 World Cup before losing the finals of Euro 2020 and 2024. And he is determined that the team go all the way this time.
“It’s been an extremely successful era of our national team,” Kane said to BBC Radio 5Live. “Of course, we want to get over the line. That is the missing piece now. We’re knocking on the door. We’re getting to these semi-finals and finals. It’s a big week. We’ve got eight days left on this tournament. We’ve been together six weeks and shown every bit of desire for the badge and we’re going to need an even bigger push now for the last week or so.”
