Here are some facts about England that will probably not come as too much of a surprise.
No player in Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad has made more offers to receive a pass than Jude Bellingham. He has made the most sprints, taken the most touches in the final third, won the most fouls, and attempted the most runs in-behind the opposition defence.
Only Elliot Anderson has completed more tackles, only Anthony Gordon has completed more take-ons, only Harry Kane had scored more goals — until Bellingham joined him on six with his double against Norway.
Bellingham is everywhere, relentless and inevitable, all at once.
There is a strong argument to suggest that the 23-year-old has been the most impactful player at the tournament, contributing to every phase of play while, somehow, keeping in touch with a historic race for the Golden Boot. Tuchel’s focus on his positioning, constantly tweaking his in-game set-up to bring the best out of Bellingham, is paying off.
“With the changes at half-time we put him into the left No 8 position,” said Tuchel after their 2-1 quarter-final win over Norway. “But that puts him some metres deeper which is not ideal for us — I want him as high as possible up the pitch.”
Bellingham has dovetailed particularly well with Kane in the final third, timing his runs from deep to attack the spaces that England’s centre-forward vacates when he drops into midfield.
Throughout his first season at Real Madrid, Bellingham scored 23 goals in all competitions with a similar connection, as manager Carlo Ancelotti praised his “motorbike runs” to crash between split strikers Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo and arrive late into the box.
In the two seasons since the arrival of Kylian Mbappe, his athleticism and strength in defensive duels have been required further back, often covering the flanks in Madrid’s 4-4-2 out-of-possession shape, taking that knack for arriving into dangerous areas further away from goal.
Giving Bellingham the scope to attack those central areas once more has been central to England’s run, and the variety of goals to come from such tactical freedom only speaks further to his versatility in the final third.
Bellingham opened his account with the kind of enterprising, head-down run that has characterised his scoring spree.
It came from his first run in-behind of the tournament that was found with a pass, latching onto the end of a first-time ball from Anderson and powering into Croatia’s box with a typically authoritative run.
What is so noticeable about Bellingham in these kinds of situations is his running power, uncannily good at protecting the ball as he barrels forward. Once he gets into a shooting position, his concentration to ensure a clean connection means he rarely misses the target. Of players to have taken at least 100 shots inside the box since he joined Madrid, only Georges Mikautadze, the Georgia forward who plays for Villarreal, has kept a higher proportion on target across Europe’s top five leagues.
From the reverse angle, he looks up at the goal and down at the ball three times in his final steps, striking through the ball as he guides it into the far corner.
His equaliser against Norway featured another stomping run and sweetly-struck finish, emphatically done all by himself.
As Anderson brings the ball down, Bellingham has drifted into the No 9 position, electing to keep his distance from centre-back Torbjorn Heggem before making his burst towards the box to get on the end of Gordon’s pass.

With three positive touches, Bellingham carves a path into the box and lines up a shot on his weaker left foot, the concentration once again evident as he glares at the ball, tongue sticking out like Michael Jordan with the basket in sight.
Watch how his leg swings right through the ball, a solid technique that increases his chances of a powerful strike even as he falls off-balance.

Against Mexico, it was Bellingham’s timing of his runs into the box that shone.
Just like above, he is happy to hang back even as Bukayo Saka receives the ball in a crossing position on the right, awaiting a dart from Kane up ahead before choosing the space to attack.
When he does eventually make his move, note Bellingham’s movement to evade Roberto Alvarado, threatening to power into the box on his right side before cleverly ducking onto his blindside down the left. From there, the acceleration and timing of his run is perfect to meet Saka’s clipped cross at the back post.

Bellingham’s quick-fire second at the Azteca came from a similar movement, this time on the counter as his forward momentum carried him into the six-yard box.
The visualisation below maps all of Bellingham’s runs in-behind.
It shows how efficient he was with those movements against Mexico, while making inroads against DR Congo, bursting through in the lead-up to Kane’s winner late in the second half.

His final two goals — a stabbed volley from a corner against Panama, and a simple finish on the rebound to win the game in extra time against Norway — demonstrate a pure striker’s instinct.
“I’ve scored loads of those goals,” Bellingham reflected on the latter. “I was just lucky to be there to put it in.”
Since the start of the 2023-24 season, only two players have scored more than his five “rebound” goals, defined by Opta as those scored within the five-second window of a goalkeeper making a save, the ball hitting the post or being cleared off the line. It suggests a little more intention than Bellingham gives himself credit for.
Once again, he is sharp in his movement, making a little dart towards the penalty spot just as the goalkeeper is about to bat the ball away. There is no other reason to make that move other than gut-feeling, the kind of impulse that sees the best strikers accumulate hundreds of goals across long and successful careers.
🏟️ ¡NO ES CASUALIDAD, ES PURA CLASE! 🎩

Remarkably, Bellingham and Kane are responsible for 12 of England’s 13 goals at the tournament.
Bellingham brings solutions to every situation, a player who can rely on unrivalled fitness, technical ability on both feet and a magnetism to the big moments that you just cannot teach.
This has been no fluke. If England are to beat Argentina and seal a place in a second World Cup final, Bellingham will likely have his say.
