An Arizona man allegedly stabbed his wife 24 times because he wanted her to stop talking, according to a report.
Nathaniel Gotham, 32, has been accused of carrying out the stabbing on Saturday in Mesa, a city in the Phoenix metropolitan area. According to a police report obtained by AZFamily, Gotham admitted to the crime while calling 911.
“I did it, it’s all my fault,” he said on the call, police say.
Following the attack, Gotham also reportedly tried to call his mother-in-law to apologize, as well as his mother to tell her that she may not see him again.
According to the police report, which was also viewed by Fox 10, officers raced to the couple’s apartment after the stabbing unfolded at around 4.30 p.m. Once there, they discovered the woman with serious injuries.
Meanwhile, the woman’s husband was on top of her, covered in blood.
In a statement obtained by the outlet, police confirmed that the woman was rushed to the hospital and remains in stable condition. At the apartment, officers noted that the woman was bleeding profusely and had sustained wounds to her hands consistent with self-defense.
Gotham’s wife had suffered stab wounds to her head, neck and face, as well as 16 stab wounds to her back, the police report revealed.
Speaking to police, Gotham said that he had wanted to stop his wife talking and, during the attack, had blamed her for wasting “the best years of my life”.
Gotham also claimed that he had “ended up with the wrong woman,” despite being married to her for four years and having been in a relationship with her for 14 years.
During their investigation, police also uncovered the weapon they believe was used in the stabbing – a kitchen steak knife.
The husband also admitted to officers that he had choked his wife in a previous argument that unfolded years earlier.
Now, Gotham has been charged with attempted murder. He made his first appearance in a Maricopa County court on Sunday and is set to appear in court again on Friday.
