Adam Scott and two key writers from Severance are reuniting for a new sci-fi thriller for Hulu. The project taps into unsettling questions about identity in a world where appearances mean everything.
A TV adaptation of sci-fi comic Shifter is in the works
The team will adapt the graphic novel Shifter into a television series, Deadline reported. Adam Scott will executive produce alongside Severance scribes Ezra Claytan Daniels and Eli Jorné, who are both writing the adaptation. The trio is currently working on the highly anticipated Season 3 of Severance, which begins production this summer.
Hulu’s upcoming show will reportedly be set in a near-future in which a banned cosmetic procedure allows people to change their faces instantly. This technology spawns an underground economy of “Shifters” — individuals who, for a fee, can become anyone a client desires. The narrative centers on Rose, a talented Shifter making a name for herself in this shadowy industry. Yet as she immerses herself more deeply in the lives of strangers, her own sense of self begins to fracture (via Deadline).
Koren Shadmi created the original Hachette graphic novel and joins the show as a consulting producer. He has described the story as an exploration of a service that thrives on human loneliness, inspired partly by real-world family rental agencies in Japan.
It was originally published in France under the name of La Passe Visage. The overview posted by Shadmi in March 2025 gives more ideas on what could be translated into the series. “Follows the trials and tribulations of Rose, an aspiring actress and full-time shifter. With the help of a facial implant, Rose can impersonate anyone.”
Further explaining, he wrote, “She rents herself out via app to prospective clients who want her to play a variety of roles: ex-wife, daughter, mother. All the while, she attempts to get her life back together after a traumatic breakdown. But it’s not easy, in an increasingly alienated society, Rose has reluctantly become a cog in a service that thrives on human loneliness.”
Now, fans would have to await the cast, release date, and trailer announcement for Shifter.
