Prime Video’s highly anticipated God of War series is reportedly searching for a new lead. The studio seems to have made the difficult decision to recast the role of Kratos, originally played by Ryan Hurst, following a serious setback during production.
God of War is replacing Ryan Hurst as Kratos after injury
Kratos is being recast after Ryan Hurst suffered a severe on-set accident in June, Deadline reported. The actor tore a bicep while performing a stunt on the Vancouver set of the PlayStation video game adaptation. Production was reportedly paused immediately, and Hurst has since undergone surgery, as per sources.
The timeline for his recovery reportedly forced the studio’s hand. A serious bicep tear requires surgery and usually demands around four to six months of healing, with a return to full physical strength taking up to a year. For a role as physically demanding as the Spartan god of war, it seems that Hurst could not safely resume filming until next year.
Looks like Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios could not wait that long. God of War carries a two-season commitment, with both instalments filming back-to-back. Four episodes already sit in the can, but the production team now plans to scrap that footage entirely, sources claimed. They will reshoot those episodes with a new lead once casting concludes.
Now, showrunner Ronald D. Moore faces a tight turnaround. Prep work will likely resume in mid-August, and cameras are expected to roll again in mid-October. It seems the urgency stems partly from Callum Vinson, the young actor playing Kratos’ son Atreus. Child actors grow fast, and the window to capture consistent footage with them narrows by the week.
Ryan Hurst had thrown himself into the role. He packed on 40 pounds of muscle and spent months tackling God of War’s gruelling physical demands. The timing stings doubly for the actor, who also appears in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, a film that just hit cinemas today.
The hunt for a new Kratos reportedly begins in earnest.
