Argentina president Javier Milei has said he will not attend the World Cup final to watch his country face Spain due to superstition.
The 55-year-old confirmed he will not make it to the United States and will watch from his presidential residence, as he has done for all the other matches.
Argentina reached their second World Cup final in as many editions on Wednesday after coming from behind to win 2-1 against England.
Asked if he was going to watch Sunday’s match against the European champions, who beat France to qualify for the final round, Milei replied per AP: “No way. I’m going to keep watching all the games from Olivos (a municipality in eastern Argentina).”
After confirming the choice was due to superstition, the president explained his other habits.
“Since it’s cold and I don’t turn on the heat, I wear an oil company-branded jacket,” he said. “The day of the Switzerland game, it made me really hot. I took it off, and they scored a goal against us. I put it back on and never took it off again.”
He is not the only one to stick to his superstitions when it comes to football. In 2024, manager Lionel Scaloni explained to a reported that he always steps onto a playing surface with his right foot first.
“I’ve done it since I began playing football and I’ll never stop doing it,” he said. “It doesn’t matter what the result of the game is.”
The players have also hatched their own routines. Lionel Messi, Rodrigo De Paul, and Claudio Tapia, the Argentina Football Association president, have posed for a photo together before certain major matches since 2021 when they won the Copa America for the first time in 28 years by beating Brazil.
Since then, the trio have taken photos to emulate the lucky charm before the Finalissima against Italy in 2022 and the World Cup final of the same year against France, winning both.
Argentina could defend that 2022 World Cup win at the MetLife Stadium on July 19. The match is set to kick off at 3pm E.T.
