Thomas Tuchel has said that England’s World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina is a “scar” that is becoming “more and more painful every single day”.

Tuchel has faced 48 hours of intense criticism since Wednesday night’s 2-1 defeat over his tactical decisions, and while he said that he takes “personal responsibility” for it all, he also insisted that he does not regret any of the choices he made in Atlanta.

England must now play the third-placed play-off game against France on Saturday, a game that Tuchel said “nobody wants” to play. But speaking at his pre-match press conference in Miami on Friday night, a downbeat Tuchel revealed how hurt he was by Wednesday evening.

“We have to live with this,” Tuchel said. “So it’s our pain, my pain, and the players’ pain. We feel the most pain of all, and it is our scar that we carry now. It is a very painful defeat, and we have to live with this defeat first and foremost. Not the critics, not the experts, not our family members who suffer as well with us and want only the best for us. But it’s basically us.”

England were 1-0 up in Atlanta with just five minutes left before conceding two late goals which sent Argentina to Sunday’s World Cup final instead. Since then Tuchel has faced criticism for England’s retreat in the second half, his defensive substitutions and his switch to a back five.

“After a kind of a shock in the beginning, it is becoming more and more painful every single day,” Tuchel said. “It will be a scar for us. Unfortunately, not the first one, and very likely not the last one.”

When asked whether this was the most painful moment of his football career, Tuchel would not commit. “I have a lot of painful ones, and it will not be the last one,” he said. “It is everything we love and hate about football. These kind of moments are very painful moments, and it will hurt for a long time.”

Tuchel is now facing a significant public backlash at home, from fans who feel frustrated that this tournament has ended the way that so many others have. In the immediate aftermath of the game Tuchel appeared to ascribe the second half to elements of English players’ “DNA”, given their struggles to keep possession under pressure.

Tuchel said that he would not participate in what he called a blame “game”, but said that as head coach the buck ultimately stopped with him. “If it’s easier, if someone takes the blame, I take the blame,” he said. “If this is the deal that you sign up for, I understand it. You have every right to do so. But I will not engage in this kind of game. Because for me, there is no one to blame.”

But while Tuchel took responsibility, he also refused to accept that any of his decisions were wrong. He has been especially blamed for his replacing Anthony Gordon with Ezri Konsa during the second drinks break on Wednesday, but he said that did not regret any of them.

“I don’t regret my decisions,” Tuchel said. “I felt that we had to do something different for the team. I took a decision, trusting my instinct, my intuition, my experience, trusting my competitiveness, and I took the decision in order to help the team and get the result. No one knows the outcome of any other substitution, of any other change.”

Tuchel also responded to Donald Trump’s criticism of his tactics, after the U.S. President had said in a press conference on Friday that it was a “mistake” to use Kane as a “defensive” player. “You use Donald Trump as your witness for the case?” Tuchel responded when first asked about the comments.

When asked again about Kane’s deep positioning on Wednesday, Tuchel explained that it was a function of the team’s positioning rather than specific instructions to Kane. “That’s what you do if you defend in a block,” Tuchel said. “You defend in a block. If we are pushed back to a deep block, everyone defends.”

England must now play France tomorrow in the third-place play-off game, with Tuchel likely to make changes before they all fly home. “Nobody wants to be tomorrow in this game,” he admitted. “All of these four [semi-finalist] teams wanted to be in New York. But it’s an official World Cup game. It’s a chance to have the best results in 60 years for England.”
