For four decades, one of the most prominent features in radio images of the Milky Way sat without a convincing explanation. The structure, known as the Galactic center lobe, appeared in observation after observation as an enormous arc seeming to balloon upward from the galaxy’s chaotic core. Proposed origins ranged from a supernova remnant to the aftermath of an energetic outburst from the supermassive black hole lurking at the galactic center.

One team described the object in a recent paper as “a Rorschach test for Galactic astrophysics.” The verdict, published in Astronomy & Astrophysics, is now in: the structure is not a nuclear feature at all, but a closed bubble of glowing gas sitting roughly 6,520 light-years from Earth, far in front of the galactic center itself.

The study, led by astrophysicist Kathryn Kreckel of Heidelberg University, argues that the object is neither at the galactic center nor shaped like a lobe. It is a three-dimensional bubble most likely inflated and lit up by stellar activity in the surrounding galactic disk. Kreckel and her colleagues propose renaming it the “greatly confused loop,” a label that captures both its actual shape and the four decades of misidentification it generated.

Why the Structure Was So Difficult to Place

The confusion was not simply a matter of outdated instruments. The galactic center is the most densely layered region of the Milky Way, packed with stars, molecular gas clouds, and dust that pile up along our line of sight from Earth. Measuring distances to objects in that direction is notoriously difficult, and the environment gives astronomers very little to anchor a reliable reading. Even well-studied objects in this region carry significant distance uncertainties.

The geometry of the Galactic center lobe made things worse. Its lower half falls directly against the bright radio glow of the galactic plane, where it blends into the surrounding emission and disappears from view. Radio observations only ever captured the upper arc, which made the structure look like an open lobe venting upward from the galaxy’s nucleus.

What was actually the bottom half of a closed bubble was hidden in plain sight, masked by the very environment astronomers were trying to study. The researchers describe the challenge as a “40-year struggle to separate genuine nuclear features from the foreground galactic disk.”

How Ionized Sulfur Exposed the Hidden Arc

The breakthrough came from an unexpected tracer. The team used data from the SDSS-V Local Volume Mapper survey, which maps glowing gas across the Milky Way in optical and infrared light by measuring emissions from many different types of gas simultaneously.

One emission line stood out: ionized sulfur, which radiates at a longer, redder wavelength than most standard tracers used in galactic surveys. Because longer wavelengths pass through dust more effectively than shorter ones, the ionized sulfur signal from the obscured lower portion of the bubble was able to travel through the intervening material and reach the detectors. For the first time, the full closed ring of the structure became visible.

The same observations gave the researchers a way to measure the bubble’s distance. By comparing how much dust was dimming the bubble’s light against detailed three-dimensional dust maps of the Milky Way, they calculated it sits only around 6,520 light-years away. That places it far short of the galactic center, which lies roughly 26,000 light-years from Earth.

At the closer distance, the object is also considerably smaller than its nuclear-scale interpretations suggested, spanning approximately 115 light-years across. That puts it in the same size range as Barnard’s Loop, a well-studied bubble in the Orion region produced by stellar winds and supernova explosions from massive stars.

Stellar Activity, Not the Black Hole, Shaped the Bubble

The GCL is a vast cloud of hydrogen gas glowing under intense ultraviolet radiation. The researchers have not yet pinpointed the specific stars responsible, but the formation process they propose is consistent with how similar structures form elsewhere in the galaxy. Groups of very massive stars born together in the same stellar nursery live short lives and die in supernova explosions, which blast open a cavity in the surrounding gas and dust.

At the boundary of that expanding cavity, the shockwave compresses nearby material and can trigger a new round of star formation. The next generation of stars then floods the surrounding gas with ultraviolet light, causing it to glow. Seen from Earth, the glowing edge of the bubble appears brightest, so the structure reads as a loop or arc rather than a sphere.

This sequence closely mirrors what produced Barnard’s Loop in Orion, and the researchers note the two objects are similar enough in scale that the same underlying process likely drove both. The galactic center lobe, once treated as a candidate marker of black hole activity or ancient nuclear eruptions, appears instead to be a relatively ordinary product of massive star death in the disk of the Milky Way.
