As The Odyssey dominates the box office in the U.S. and worldwide, Christopher Nolan fans have begun wondering about his next movie. However, in a new interview, the auteur revealed that audiences may have to wait a while before his next project arrives.
Christopher Nolan says his next movie could be three years away after The Odyssey
Nolan discussed when his next movie might come out during a new interview with TODAY. Notably, his most recent movie before The Odyssey, Oppenheimer, came out in 2023, so there was a three-year gap between the two projects. Nolan disclosed that there would be “at least” another three years before his next movie arrives.
During the interview, Nolan emphasized just how grueling the process of making The Odyssey was. “I definitely hit the limits of my own stamina and everybody’s stamina, I think. I mean, it’s The Odyssey, of course it should be difficult,” he said. “We’re not doing the job right making a film of The Odyssey if it doesn’t seem difficult.”
This comes after Nolan expressed interest in doing a horror movie in the future, admitting that the biggest obstacle that has prevented him from exploring that genre until now is finding the right story. He reiterated this during a newer interview with the Empire Podcast. “I’ve never clicked with a particular idea or concept that worked for me,” Nolan admitted, adding, “I love the genre. Of all genres, it’s the most visceral. Where the direct response to the audience is the most important. That is to say, you’re trying to make people literally feel something in their bones about what’s going on on-screen.”
Nolan made his feature-film debut with 1998’s Following. The Odyssey is his most recent feature as a director. While it remains to be seen what subject he will tackle for his next film, horror is indeed a great option. However, as Nolan indicated, that movie isn’t likely to come out before 2029.
The Odyssey is currently in theaters.
