The merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. has been put on hold. A U.S. federal judge has temporarily halted the pending $110 billion merger following a legal challenge from a coalition of states.

The temporary restraining order was issued by U.S. District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín of the Northern District of California. NBC News reports that the pause comes after a coalition of 12 U.S. states filed a lawsuit seeking to block the proposed deal. This ruling stops the parties from moving ahead with the deal for the next 14 days.
A hearing has been scheduled for August 3 to determine whether the temporary restraining order should remain in effect until the case proceeds. Alongside 11 other state attorneys general, California Attorney General Rob Bonta spearheaded the suit to prevent the merger. According to the attorneys general, the merger would harm competition. It could increase prices, reduce quality, and decrease the availability of films and TV shows.
The complaint also alleges that the deal would weaken competition in theatrical film distribution, blockbuster film releases, and cable television. According to the states, the merger could potentially impact U.S. theaters, cable operators, and viewers.
Paramount has vehemently refuted the accusations. According to the company, the case is based on misinformation and flawed legal reasoning. The company also called the request for a restraining order “one of the flimsiest merger challenges in the modern era of antitrust law.” Paramount said it will continue its fight to defend the transaction.
The U.S. Department of Justice and regulators in Australia and China have approved the deal.However, the proposal is still under review in the EU, while UK regulators have also raised concerns. If approved, the deal would create a giant media empire, combining the holdings of two of Hollywood’s media conglomerates.
The August 3 hearing is expected to determine whether the merger can proceed or whether the lawsuit will continue.
