After a summer of World Cup TV records in the U.S. being reset over and over, the biggest game delivered one final new standard for soccer viewership:

The World Cup final — won by Spain 1-0 over Argentina — drew 38.9 million viewers on Fox, making it the most-watched English-language soccer telecast in U.S. history.

Telemundo also delivered record preliminary ratings for the final, with more than 22 million total viewers, making the game the most-watched Spanish-language World Cup final telecast in U.S. history by total audience.

Taken together, the U.S. audience consuming the World Cup final on Sunday put it in the same ratings category as the NFL playoffs, the most popular programming on U.S. TV outside of the Super Bowl.

The North American locations of this year’s World Cup helped generate enthusiasm for massive watch parties well beyond the stadium boundaries, while delivering kickoff times in the afternoons and evenings that made viewing choices convenient.

The audience measurement system from Nielsen, revamped a year ago to more accurately account for viewing beyond traditional TV couch-surfing, including all that “out of home” viewing at bars and jam-packed outdoor festivals, now accounts for attention more clearly.

The domestic enthusiasm to watch the “home” teams from Mexico, the U.S. and Canada drove increased interest within the U.S., of course. Still, TV numbers across the full range of participating countries indicated that the event’s appeal was much wider than in previous years.

And then there were the stars. From Erling Haaland to Harry Kane to Kylian Mbappe to Lionel Messi and so many others (Vezinha!), the biggest names delivered goal after goal (after “gooooool”). The world’s soccer superpowers drew in viewers, of course, but the numbers made it clear that the smaller nations did, too.

However, there are questions. Will MLS and NWSL capture any of that increased attention? Should our expectation for the women’s World Cup next year in Brazil be for more record-setting audiences? Now that more names are recognizable, will more U.S. viewers tune in to the Premier League, La Liga, the Bundesliga and other top European leagues available on U.S. TV? Are mid-half advertising stoppages (in the form of “hydration breaks”) the new normal?

Capped by its final, the 2026 World Cup set a new bar for enthusiasm across the country, prompting more people to tune in to soccer.
