The Utah Mammoth will retain Barrett Hayton after matching the New Jersey Devils’ one-year, $4.775 million offer sheet to the center, the team announced Wednesday.
The Devils made one of July 1’s boldest plays when they went the offer-sheet route with Hayton, and Utah took the full week allowed to announce its decision.
If the Mammoth had chosen not to match, the Devils would have received Hayton in exchange for a 2027 second-round pick.
Now that the Mammoth matched, they get to keep Hayton and can sign him to an extension beginning Jan. 1, but are prohibited from trading him for one year. If he’s not extended, Hayton will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
It was the first offer sheet of the offseason, before the Flyers signed Leo Carlsson to a record-setting five-year, $90 million ($18 million AAV). The Anaheim Ducks have yet to announce whether or not they will match.

The Devils went the offer-sheet route after trade talks for Hayton broke down with the Mammoth, according to a league source speaking on condition of anonymity to address negotiations that aren’t public. The $4.775 million figure is very close to the maximum a team can offer without including a first-round pick as compensation.
Hayton, 26, was the No. 5 pick by the Arizona Coyotes in the 2018 draft and moved with the franchise to Utah two years ago. He had a down season with only 10 goals and 25 points in 65 games, with his ice time dropping to just 15 minutes per game.
Hayton’s value entering restricted free agency was projected by AFP Analytics to be approximately $5.37 million over a three-year deal, so the contract is relatively close to what he is likely worth on a one-year deal. While not a big offensive driver, he is a strong two-way player, and centers are at a premium now across the NHL, especially given how thin the unrestricted free-agent class was this summer.
The Mammoth have been aggressive early in free agency, signing Anders Lee to a $5.6 million deal and acquiring center Vincent Trocheck via trade.
