Netflix is finally bringing another underrated movie to subscribers. Adam Brody returns to the streaming giant with The Kid Detective next month.
The Kid Detective is coming to Netflix next month
According to What’s on Netflix, The Kid Detective arrives on August 1, 2026. The mystery comedy-drama was directed by Evan Morgan. It was originally released back in October 2020. The movie was inspired by the Encyclopedia Brown book series.
Adam Brody stars as former child detective Abe Applebaum. Abe was once famous across the town of Willowbrook. Years later, his detective agency is barely surviving. He struggles with depression, addiction, and past mistakes. Abe never solved childhood friend Gracie Gulliver’s disappearance. That failure still haunts him years later.
Everything changes after teenager Caroline hires Abe for help. She wants him to investigate her boyfriend Patrick Chang’s murder. Abe finally gets his first real murder investigation. As the case moves forward, dark secrets slowly emerge.
Patrick was hiding drug dealing, an affair, and more. Abe soon links the murder with Gracie Gulliver’s disappearance. The investigation eventually points toward Principal Erwin as the culprit. Abe learns that Erwin kidnapped Gracie years before the murder.
He also discovers that Erwin killed Patrick to cover everything up. The case restores Abe’s reputation but leaves him emotionally broken, becoming the biggest challenge of his career. It also gives him one last chance to prove himself.
The movie also stars Sophie Nélisse, Tzi Ma, Wendy Crewson, Peter MacNeill, Maurice Dean Wint, Jonathan Whittaker, Sarah Sutherland, and Amalia Williamson. Despite grossingjust $367 million worldwide, the movie received strong reviews. The Kid Detective holds an 85% critics’ score and 75% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
With The Kid Detective arriving in just a few weeks, Netflix subscribers can soon discover one of Adam Brody’s most overlooked mystery films.
