An escaped murder suspect who fled a Georgia jail over the weekend while a guard’s back was turned is back behind bars following a multi-agency manhunt, federal authorities have confirmed.
Pablo Zuriel Miranda, 32, was captured on Tuesday morning, bringing an end to a high-profile search that drew assistance from local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, including the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the FBI.
Miranda had been missing since early Sunday morning, when he escaped from the Atkinson County Jail while awaiting trial on two counts of felony murder and aggravated assault stemming from a deadly May 2024 shooting.
Atkinson County Sheriff David Moore publicly took responsibility for the incident during a press conference before Miranda’s capture, describing the escape as the result of administrative oversights.
The incident occurred at 5:55 a.m. on Sunday in the jail’s booking area while staff prepared to load daily meals, WALB reported. Because the facility does not operate its own kitchen, food is transported daily from the Coffee County Jail.
“For whatever reason, the jailers present thought it was a good idea for him to load the trays,” Moore told the outlet, noting that Miranda had been escorted to a transport van parked outside the sally port.
While Miranda was loading the trays, the guard turned her back to throw away a box. When she turned back around, Miranda fled on foot, and the officer was unable to catch him.
According to Moore, Miranda was assigned to a laundry role usually kept behind locked doors. The sheriff noted he had previously raised red flags about the inmate’s supervision.
“I brought that to the jail’s attention that that was not acceptable,” Moore said.
Moore offered a public apology to the community.
“I’m sorry,” Moore said. “I failed you. We made bad decisions, and now the community has to suffer for it. And I’m sorry for that.”
Reflecting on past security issues during his 17-year tenure, Moore said, “This one absolutely has tore my soul out. I was hurt by it. I was embarrassed by it. It just vexed my soul.”
The search involved extensive air and ground support across the region. Agencies deployed thermal imaging equipment via a Georgia State Patrol helicopter, while Coffee County units flew infrared-equipped drones over surrounding areas, according to WALB.
Law enforcement also conducted door-to-door checks to verify resident safety and confirm no one was assisting Miranda.
Following the escape, deputies immediately secured the residence of Miranda’s ex-wife. Miranda was originally arrested on May 1, 2024, in connection with a shooting off Highway 64 that left his ex-wife’s boyfriend dead from multiple gunshot wounds.
“She was one of the first assignments,” Moore said. “Go to her house. Make sure she’s okay. And stay on her house. That family was secured.”
Investigators initially suspected Miranda might attempt to cross the southern border, leading the FBI to issue a $10,000 reward for information leading to his arrest, as reported by ABC affiliate WSB-TV. Moore noted that evidence pointed toward a pre-planned escape rather than collusion within the facility.
“He planned this. And nothing about it said inside job. Poor decisions, but not inside job,” Moore said, cautioning the public against online rumors. “There is absolutely zero value in anything you learn on Facebook. Every warrior with a damn keypad can say some of the [most] God-awful, wildest, unsubstantiated things.”
Authorities have not yet released specific details regarding the exact location or circumstances of Miranda’s capture Tuesday morning, or whether additional charges will be filed against anyone who may have assisted him.
