Australian middle-distance runner Ollie Hoare reportedly witnessed a knife incident while on a training run at Glasgow during the Commonwealth Games last week.
Hoare saw someone brandishing a weapon while on a run near the city centre, according to BBC.
The knife incident was initially reported as being linked to the fatal stabbing of 44-year-old Paul McMinigal on Burgher Street in Glasgow’s east end on Friday. However, GPS data from Hoare’s watch confirmed he was at a different location and witnessed a separate knife incident on Saturday, reports said.
Authorities have not yet provided any further details about the knife incident that Hoare witnessed. There is also no information currently about the exact location of the incident, whether anyone was injured, and whether any arrests were made.
Officials reportedly checked on Hoare after the incident, and it is understood there are no ongoing safety concerns within the Australian team.
“We are working closely with Glasgow 2026 to ensure the safety of our athletes, coaches and officials, as well as their family and friends, at the Games,” an Australian team spokesperson said.
“Our regular Games security briefings are keeping us informed on potential risks across the city, and we’re sharing applicable information with team members to ensure their awareness and safety.”
Police have yet to comment on whether the incident was linked to the anti-immigration protests in the city or any other criminal investigation.
Following the incident, it was reported that Australian athletes had been advised by the athletics team management to train in small groups and avoid wearing the team’s distinctive green and gold uniforms during outdoor runs to avoid attracting attention.
However, BBC Scotland later reported that this guidance was standard protocol at major championships and was not introduced specifically because of events in Glasgow.
The Independent has reached out to the Australian Athletics for comment.
Police arrested 15 people on offences including assault, possession of offensive weapons, breach of the peace, obstruction and resisting arrest.
Officers also recovered several weapons and set up containment zones in parts of the city centre to bring the disorder under control.
Athletes are staying in hotels across the city rather than in a dedicated athletes’ village for these Commonwealth Games.
According to the Australian Athletics, five Australian athletes will attempt to defend their Commonwealth Games titles: Matt Denny (discus), Ollie Hoare (1500m), Kurtis Marschall (pole vault), Nina Kennedy (pole vault) and Jemima Montag (10,000m Walk).
