Jordan Henderson has left Brentford ahead of his anticipated move to Chelsea.
The 36-year-old spent just 12 months at the Gtech Community Stadium, making 34 appearances for the Bees after joining from Ajax, but has now had his contract terminated.
That paves the way for a move across London to Stamford Bridge with Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso eager to add some experience to a young squad.
Henderson is renown for his professional attitude and Alonso is hoping that influence will inspire a group that limped to 10th in the Premier League last season.
The England international told Brentford’s official website: “I leave Brentford with a lot of gratitude for the opportunity the club gave me, and for the support and care shown to me and my family from day one.
“Coming back to the Premier League was really important to me, and Brentford gave me that chance. I’ll always be thankful for that.
“I hope I was able to play my part in helping the team through an important period for the club. We achieved a lot together last season, and it’s something everyone involved should be proud of.
“Brentford is a special football club. It’s ambitious, progressive and full of good people. From the owners and leadership, to the coaching staff, the players and everyone behind the scenes, it’s been a privilege to be part of it.”
Henderson could be joined at Chelsea by Welbeck
Henderson started out at Sunderland before a big-money move to Liverpool in 2011. He made 492 appearances for the Merseyside club, taking over from Steven Gerrard as captain and lifting six major trophies, including the Premier League and Champions League.
A short, ill-advised move to Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia was followed by a spell with Ajax before he joined Brentford.
Henderson’s switch to Chelsea is likely to be completed in the coming days and he could be joined by another thirtysomething in Danny Welbeck.
The Brighton forward is also a target for Chelsea, who are currently on a pre-season tour of Asia.
