A Kentucky man who won the $167.3 million Powerball jackpot, the largest in the state’s history, was arrested Sunday for the fourth time since claiming his prize, this time on domestic violence allegations.
James Farthing, 51, of Georgetown, was booked into the Scott County Jail after allegedly strangling a woman following a boating trip. The unidentified woman reportedly told police that the pair argued when they returned, and that Farthing put both hands around her neck, restricting her breathing, WKYT reports.
He faces charges of first-degree strangulation, domestic violence-related, and fourth-degree assault, domestic violence causing minor injury, online records show.
Farthing pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Scott County District Court. A judge set his bond at $15,000 and ordered him to have no contact with the alleged victim. He must also wear an electronic monitoring device that alerts authorities if he violates the no-contact order.
Farthing initially made headlines in April 2025 after purchasing the winning $2 Powerball ticket in Georgetown, Kentucky, and announcing he planned to split the winnings with his mother, Linda Grizzle.

“It’s going to be a good Mother’s Day,” Grizzle told WHAS at the time of the win. “This is going to pay off my debt.”
Farthing’s latest arrest marks the fourth time he has been taken into custody since winning the Powerball. Just days after claiming his record-breaking prize, Farthing was arrested in Florida following a late-night altercation at a beach resort. He allegedly kicked a Pinellas County sheriff’s deputy in the face while officers were breaking up a fight and then attempted to flee before being tased. He later pleaded guilty and received a sentence of time served and $1,000 in fines.
After that incident, he spoke to WKYT about turning his life around.
“I’ve caused a lot of stress on her [my mom], you know, I’ve made some bad decisions in life, and you know, God’s been good because I’ve kept my faith and done right, and something’s happened good for me,” Farthing said in May 2025.
In February 2026, Farthing was arrested in Georgetown on an intimidation charge after a woman called 911, saying she feared for her life as people in a home might harm her. Officers found the woman hiding under a desk, and she told investigators Farthing had picked her up for a gathering before allegedly pressuring her to take a “gummy.” During a search of the home, deputies also found a handgun, ammunition, marijuana and drug paraphernalia, according to authorities.
Farthing was arrested for a third time in March on charges of second-degree burglary and marijuana possession. Police alleged security camera footage showed him entering a Lexington home, where he was accused of stealing about $12,000 in cash. He was booked into the Fayette County Detention Center and later released on bond as the case proceeded.
Farthing’s criminal record dates to 1994 and includes arrests in multiple Kentucky counties on charges such as burglary, drug offenses, engaging in organized crime and escaping from a detention facility, according to WKYT.
Anyone 18 or older can legally buy a Kentucky Lottery ticket, even if they have a criminal record, unless they’re prohibited from doing so under the terms of their probation or parole.
