AMC has struck a massive global licensing deal with Netflix, securing a $500 million future for The Walking Dead universe. The pact reshapes where audiences will find the post-apocalyptic saga. It follows years of fragmented streaming rights and is a strategic pivot for both entertainment giants.
AMC’s $500 million deal brings the entire Walking Dead universe to Netflix
Beginning in 2027, every chapter of the decaying world will stream on both Netflix and AMC+ under a co-exclusive arrangement spanning five years. The agreement bundles the original series with all six spinoffs, totalling 371 episodes of content.
Franchise titles covered include Fear the Walking Dead, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, The Walking Dead: Dead City, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, and Tales of The Walking Dead. Licenses for each series will activate on different dates across various geographic territories, rolling out as existing streaming commitments expire.
The deal ends a long-standing digital divide. Netflix has held exclusive US streaming rights for the flagship show since 2011. For the first time, AMC+ will gain the ability to stream the original series, while Netflix simultaneously extends its grip on the franchise in the United Kingdom, Italy, Australia, and New Zealand.
Lori Conkling, Vice President of Licensing at Netflix, framed the agreement as a continuation of a successful formula. “Audiences have discovered and loved The Walking Dead on Netflix for nearly 15 years and the show continues to attract new fans,” she said. Conkling added that the partnership expands access globally, bringing the entirety of the universe to the platform.
After all, the move creates a unified library that has never existed before. Instead of chasing episodes across different services, viewers will find everything in one consistent pair of destinations. Kristin Dolan, CEO of AMC Global Media, described the arrangement as a global destination for the franchise. “We are thrilled to expand our long-time partnership with Netflix around The Walking Dead,” Dolan said. She confirmed the original series lands on AMC+ early next year (via Variety).
