Hugo Broos has stepped down from his role as South Africa head coach following the expiration of his contract.
South Africa said on social media on Friday that Broos, 74, would be departing from the role he has held for more than five years, a tenure which saw the Belgian coach lead the nation to their first-ever appearance in a World Cup knockout stage match this summer.
Speaking in a press conference, Broos said the “long absence from my family and the lonely moments in South Africa have led me to make this difficult decision”, as he announced he would not be extending his contract. He also alluded to retirement, by mentioning his “pension”.
In July, the South African Football Association (SAFA) issued two separate statements, the first dismissing reports that Broos had been sacked from his role, with the second statement denying he had been offered a one-year contract extension.

Broos led South Africa to their first World Cup qualification since 2002 as they appeared at this summer’s inaugural 48-team competition — having appeared at the 2010 edition as the host nation.
In North America, South Africa reached the knockout stages for the first time as they clinched second place in Group A, with a 1-0 victory against South Korea and a 1-1 draw with Czech Republic.
Broos’ side were defeated 1-0 by co-hosts Canada in the round of 32.
Broos also guided South Africa to the bronze medal at the 2023 AFCON, where they beat Morocco and Cape Verde in the knockouts before a defeat by Nigeria on penalties in the semi-final. They went on to beat DR Congo on penalties in the third-placed match.
He was appointed in 2021 following South Africa’s failure to qualify for AFCON, having previously had a year-long spell in charge of Cameroon.
South Africa are scheduled to return to action in September, when they begin the qualifying campaign for AFCON 2027 against Guinea.
