Barcelona boss Hansi Flick has admitted the club need to strengthen their attack before the new season as they continue their search for a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski.
The Spanish champions are targeting Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez, with club president Joan Laporta confirming Barcelona have submitted an offer worth around €100 million for the Argentina international.
Speaking on Monday, Flick acknowledged Barcelona are still looking to add a new No. 9.
“We have to wait,” he said. “I have total confidence with Deco and we know that we have to do something. It depends also on Ferran’s situation and then we will see what happens.”
Barcelona’s plans are also being shaped by uncertainty over Ferran Torres, who has entered the final year of his contract.
The Spain international, who scored the winner in the World Cup final, has been linked with Paris Saint-Germain and several Premier League clubs, while Barcelona remain open to offering him a new deal.
Torres admitted his future remains undecided.
“I currently have a contract with Barca, but in football you never know,” he said.
“I’m just waiting to make the right decision. I don’t know yet.”
Flick confident players can step up
If Torres departs and Barcelona fail to sign a new striker, Flick believes he already has players capable of filling the role.
Summer arrivals Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi can both play through the middle, while Lamine Yamal has also been used centrally.
“Lamine has played in one or two matches with us and I think he’s a fantastic player, a world-class player, so he also can adapt to this,” Flick said.
“But at the end of the day, the focus with Lamine is more as a No. 7, but we will see what happens.
“I think Gordon and also Adeyemi can play on both sides. They can also play as a No. 9. So we have a lot of options actually. We will see.”
