Ted Lasso Season 4 marks Jason Sudeikis‘ return with an unfortunate record. The series has debuted with the worst critic score since it started, following the first episode’s release today on Apple TV. Ted Lasso season 4 has a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes with 27 reviews at the time of writing.
While that sounds very low, and it is by the show’s standards, it’s not all bad news. The series debuted with a 92% score in the first season, peaking at 98% in the one after. Ted Lasso Season 3 was its worst yet, at 81%. However, while Season 4 has started at 78%, plenty more reviews are yet to be poured in. For reference, Season 3 has over 200 reviews contributing to its low score. With its current score, Ted Lasso Season 4 is still certified fresh.
What are critics’ reviews saying about Ted Lasso Season 4?
The new season arrives three years after its last outing. The wait has been long, but it appears most critics felt it was worth it. FandomWire’s review noted the new season works “better than expected”, but also added that it feels “a bit shallow.”
Nerdist’s review was similarly middling, praising the show’s highlights while noting plenty of disappointments. The review noted that viewers who were disappointed with previous seasons won’t be won over by the new episodes. “It’s not a return to form, but it’s clearly also trying to fix many of the problems that sank it before,” reads an excerpt from the review.
Time Magazine’s review was more negative on the season, which delves into the show’s exploration of women’s soccer. While the review praises Sudeikis in the role, it also notes that “a different coach is going to have to inspire those locker rooms, because Ted Lasso just doesn’t belong.”
The New York Post’s review maintained that Season 4 might be its best, “offering team-building, sincerity, an emphasis on everyone trying their best, all undercut with enough dry British humor to keep the whole thing from feeling too cloyingly sweet.” Elsewhere, IndieWire’s review noted that its episodes were “painfully long” but didn’t have “enough conflict to drive the narrative.”
