This family was shocked to discover just how much it cost them to charge their EV at a public parking lot in China.
A British family discovered this first-hand when they plugged in a Volvo XC70 they had been test-driving.
Their latest YouTube video took viewers through the charging process from start to finish, and the results were pretty shocking.
It was a reminder of how quickly the country’s EV landscape continues to evolve.
The reality of charging an EV in China
The family often shares their adventures on their YouTube channel, The Fisher-Zhangs in China.
They have been living in northeastern China, and are currently considering buying a new vehicle.
After testing several models, the Volvo XC70 caught their eye, thanks to its comfortable ride, premium sound system, and practical size.
But what about the realities of charging?
With the car parked outside a local Wanda Plaza shopping mall, the family decided it was a good opportunity to try charging it for themselves.
The process turned out to be refreshingly straightforward.
After opening the charging port, plugging in the cable, and scanning a QR code with a smartphone, the charger was up and running in moments.

They also discovered an added bonus.
Drivers charging their vehicles at the shopping center receive free parking, making the stop even better value.
But what did it cost for a convenience like this?

What does it cost to charge EVs in parking lots?
At the start of the session, the Volvo was sitting at around 70 percent battery.
After spending roughly 20 minutes at the slower charging point, the battery was already fully charged.
The total cost came to just over 15 yuan, or a little over $2.
The YouTuber admitted he was stunned by how inexpensive the experience was, especially after previously charging his electric bike for only one yuan ($0.15).

He also pointed out that charging stations like this have become incredibly common around Fushun, with one located close to their home.
In his opinion, this made EV ownership far more convenient than many people might expect.
The couple admitted that hybrids actually make more sense in their region, as freezing winters can affect battery performance more than in southern China.
Even so, they were impressed by how accessible charging had become and are seriously considering getting an EV for themselves.
