Igby Rigney leads a major television series for the first time in The Shards. The FX thriller, created by Ryan Murphy and Bret Easton Ellis, premiered on August 5, 2026, and confronts its young star with drug-fueled parties, a serial killer, and intimate sexual content.
Igby Rigney explains why The Shards’ sex scenes were no big deal
Rigney dismissed any nervousness about the show’s explicit material. He focused on executing the scenes with precision rather than dwelling on discomfort. “I definitely thought about it, but it wasn’t something I was very worried about,” Rigney stated to Variety. “I wanted to make sure that I could pull it off in a way that was good for the screen and good for whatever aesthetic values Ryan had for the story.”
He credited intimacy coordinators for removing any cause for concern. These professionals choreographed every movement and monitored each moment on set. “It’s like doing a dance under a microscope,” Rigney explained. “It’s not a big cause for concern for me.”
However, the most demanding scenes on The Shards required no nudity at all. Igby Rigney struggled to play his character’s deepening alienation from a tight-knit friend group. Bret functions as an observer who notices dangers his friends refuse to acknowledge. The more he attempts to warn them, the more they push him away. Playing that isolation while surrounded by actors who had become genuine friends tested Rigney’s focus.
“A big challenge actually came from how close we all got in real life,” he admitted. “As actors, we’re all friends and having the time of our lives, and I had to lock into this thing of ‘nobody is listening to me.’” He recalled suppressing smiles while co-stars chatted around him. He mentally recited voiceover passages just to stay grounded in Bret’s loneliness.
Maintaining that emotional wall against people he adored spending time with demanded far more than any choreographed sex scene did.
In the movie, the 26-year-old actor plays a 17-year-old Ellis during his final year at Buckley prep school in 1981 Los Angeles. A mysterious student named Robert Mallory arrives as a killer called The Trawler begins targeting classmates. Through it all, Bret wrestles with his closeted homosexuality and growing isolation from friends.
