Molly Ringwald recently revealed why The Secret Life of the American Teenager ranks as her worst career experience. The actress made the candid admission during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. She rated the ABC Family series a one out of 10 during a project-ranking game.
Ringwald clarified that one difficult cast member ruined the entire experience for her. She praised much of the ensemble, but singled out lead Shailene Woodley for kind words. “I love the cast. I love Shailene,” she told Cohen during the segment. She then added, “There was one person that was really difficult.” Ringwald declined to identify the individual but emphasized their impact. “I’m not gonna say who that one person is, [but] they brought it down to a one,” she stated.
The Secret Life of the American Teenager aired on ABC Family from 2008 until 2013 across five seasons. The show starred Woodley as Amy, a teenager navigating an unexpected pregnancy and its aftermath. Ringwald portrayed Amy’s mother, Anne, and appeared in all 96 episodes of the series. The cast also included Ken Baumann, Mark Derwin, India Eisley, Greg Finley, and Steve Schirripa.
Meanwhile, Ringwald had nothing but praise for her experience making Pretty in Pink. She gave the 1986 John Hughes film a perfect ten out of ten rating. “It was written for me. He wrote the movie for me,” she said warmly. She also revealed that Hughes had planned another film with her and Matthew Broderick. “It was called Oil and Vinegar, and we were all set to do it,” Ringwald shared. However, the project ultimately fell through and never entered production.
