The European Space Agency’s (ESA) Proba-3 mission has captured a rare sequence of three solar prominence eruptions inside the sun’s inner corona. The images offer a new look at a region of the sun that is normally difficult to observe, thanks to two spacecraft creating an artificial eclipse in space.

Flying in precise formation, the two Proba-3 spacecraft are designed to block the bright solar disk and reveal the faint structures around it. This unique setup allows scientists to study the inner corona, the hottest part of the sun’s atmosphere, where important solar activity takes place.

The observations were made on September 21, 2025, during an active period on the sun. The mission’s ASPIICS coronagraph captured images every five minutes, recording three prominence eruptions over a five-hour period.

Three Eruptions Appear In A Rare Solar Observation

The new animation combines images from ASPIICS with data from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and its Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA). The solar disk appears in dark orange, while the inner corona is shown as a faint yellow glow around the sun.

The main features seen in the images are prominences, large structures made of cooler plasma suspended near the sun. They stand out because the surrounding corona is extremely hot, reaching around one million degrees, while prominence material is closer to 10,000 degrees.

These structures can grow outward from the sun before erupting and sending plasma in different directions. Andrei Zhukov from the Royal Observatory of Belgium, principal investigator for ASPIICS, explained that prominences are sometimes observed near the sun despite being much cooler than the surrounding corona.

“Seeing so many prominence eruptions in such a short timeframe is rare, so I’m very happy we managed to capture them so clearly during our observation window,” Zhukov said.

He added that the team was pleased to capture the events clearly during the observation window. The sequence gives researchers a closer view of how these cooler structures behave while surrounded by the extremely hot solar corona.

Helium Helps Reveal What Happens Around The Sun

To study the corona, the ASPIICS coronagraph uses several filters that detect different spectral lines. Each of these lines corresponds to light released by a specific element found in the solar atmosphere.

The prominence eruptions observed by Proba-3 were recorded using a spectral line produced by helium atoms. This wavelength makes the solar atmosphere appear similar to what the human eye could see during a total solar eclipse through a yellow filter.

The European Space Agency explains that the soft yellow glow around the sun in the images comes from visible light from the solar surface scattering off electrons in the corona.

By combining ASPIICS observations with those from AIA, scientists can compare different views of the same solar activity. The AIA instrument also captures helium emissions, while ASPIICS focuses on the faint structures surrounding the solar disk.

A New Way To Watch The Sun’s Hidden Atmosphere

The Proba-3 mission uses advanced positioning systems to keep its two spacecraft aligned while creating artificial eclipses in orbit. One spacecraft blocks the sun, allowing the other to observe the surrounding corona.

“The corona is extremely hot, about 200 times hotter than the sun’s surface,”explained Zhukov.

This technique gives scientists a clearer view of the inner corona, a region that has been difficult to observe regularly because of the brightness of the sun itself. The ESA describes Proba-3 as a mission that provides a missing piece for consistent solar observations by opening access to this part of the sun’s atmosphere.

The latest images show how artificial eclipses can change the way scientists study solar activity. By capturing prominence eruptions in motion, Proba-3 is helping researchers follow events that were once much harder to observe.
