Kawhi Leonard had a second previously unknown sponsorship deal with Daktronics, the company that manufactured the Intuit Dome’s Halo Board video board and others in the sports world, according to reporting from the “Pablo Torre Finds Out” podcast.
The podcast, released Thursday night, cites multiple anonymous sources from inside the Clippers and the Intuit Dome project who said that Leonard was a Clippers spokesperson for Daktronics. It’s unclear when the contract began and ended.
One anonymous source told Torre that the contract was for “millions of dollars.” The company has no other public celebrity endorsement deals.
“When we first got connected and we first spoke, I said, ‘Pablo, you know the big halo board hanging from the ceiling in the Intuit Dome? That’s from a company called Daktronics,’” an anonymous high-level source under contract for the Intuit Dome project said on the podcast. “And Daktronics also had a spokesperson from the Clippers named Kawhi Leonard.”
When the podcast asked the company to confirm if Leonard had an endorsement deal, it referred them to a spokesperson for a crisis management firm who said “my understanding is Daktronics doesn’t have a deal with Kawhi right now.” When asked for clarification, the spokesman said, “I don’t know what the company wants to say, or can say, given the Wachtell investigation and all that.”
The law firm Wachtell Lipton is investigating the Clippers for potential salary cap circumvention stemming by facilitating an alleged sponsorship deal with Aspiration. It has also looked into whether the Clippers improperly covered expenses for Leonard but were not reimbursed for them. That story first emerged in September.
The Athletic has reached out to the Clippers for comment.
