Netflix has been a home for several genres in both film and television over the years, with reality and drama emerging as two of its most popular categories when it comes to original programming.
The streaming service has now branched out to live entertainment with events like MLB’s Opening Day and Home Run Derby, as well as mega-events like the Jake Paul v. Mike Tyson fight.
As the service continues to adapt, it still remains committed to its original mission of being the best place to watch the best of Hollywood on a single subscription. Horror fans will enjoy what’s on offer for August, as six films from an iconic franchise have been added to the popular streaming service.
Six Films Added From A Beloved Franchise
Netflix has added six films from the Child’s Play/Chucky franchise, starring the titular possessed children’s doll. The entries begin with 1990’s Child’s Play 2, a direct sequel to the first film released in 1988.
The movie sees a revived Chucky doll chasing after Andy Barclay, the child placed in foster care after the events of the first film. The second installment in the franchise was popular with audiences, making nearly $36 million at the box office against its $13 million budget.
Child’s Play 3 has also been added to the platform. In the 1991 film, Chucky is revived once again and follows a now 16-year-old Andy to military academy, still in search of a permanent body to transfer into.
The franchise would take a turn after a seven-year absence, returning with Bride of Chucky in 1998. After dropping the Child’s Play moniker, the films would take on a more self-referential, humor-based approach.
Series favorite Jennifer Tilly makes her debut in this installment as the aforementioned bride, a role she would reprise in three more films and the Chucky TV show.
2004’s Seed of Chucky has also been added to Netflix, a deeper shift into comedy from series creator and director Don Mancini. In it, a doll resurrects Chucky and his bride after realizing they are its parents.
Seed of Chucky was the final film in the Child’s Play franchise to be released in theaters until the 2019 remake.
Curse of Chucky and Cult of Chucky are also included in this recent Netflix release, available on streaming for the first time on the platform after releasing direct-to-video in 2013 and 2017, respectively.
Watching the Series Beyond Netflix
Fans looking for even more Child’s Play and Chucky can watch the acclaimed original series on Peacock. The show ran for three seasons on SyFy and the USA Network, blending horror and comedy as many of the original films did in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Several fan favorite characters from the films return, including Brad Dourif as the voice of Chucky and Alex Vincent as an adult Andy Barclay.
As for the six Chucky films now available on Netflix, fans can stream them now after they were added with the service’s August 1 update.
