Not every iconic album becomes an instant success.
When Guns N’ Roses released Appetite for Destruction on July 21, 1987, the record initially struggled to find an audience. But thanks to relentless touring, growing radio airplay, and the breakout success of singles like “Welcome to the Jungle” and “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” the album slowly gained momentum. Then, on Aug. 8, 1988, it finally reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200, cementing its place in rock history.
Nearly four decades later, Appetite for Destruction remains one of the most influential rock albums ever recorded. Earlier this year, Consequence of Sound even called it “the greatest debut hard rock album of all time.”
The Album Took Nearly a Year to Reach No. 1
Unlike many chart-topping albums that debut at or near the top of the charts, Appetite for Destruction was a slow-burning success.
The album spent months climbing the Billboard 200 before finally claiming the No. 1 spot 38 years ago today. By then, Guns N’ Roses was one of the hottest acts in music, fueled by a string of now-classic songs that helped define late-1980s hard rock.
The record produced some of the band’s biggest hits, including “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Paradise City,” and the chart-topping ballad “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” which became the group’s first and only No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100.
Released during the height of glam metal, Appetite for Destruction offered something grittier and more dangerous. Its raw sound and unapologetic attitude helped distinguish Guns N’ Roses from many of their contemporaries and ushered in a new era for hard rock.
The album’s influence has only grown over time. It has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling debut albums in music history and the best-selling debut album in U.S. history.
