Robert Redford nearly walked away from a 1993 classic that later became one of the highest-grossing films of his career. Before production began, the Oscar-winning actor considered leaving the project over concerns about his role in the story.
That film was Indecent Proposal, a romantic drama that paired Redford with Demi Moore. Woody Harrelson also joined the cast in a controversial story about love, money and temptation.
Directed by Adrian Lyne, the movie follows a young married couple, Diana (Moore) and David Murphy (Harrelson), as they struggle with financial problems. Their situation changes when billionaire businessman John Gage, played by Redford, offers them $1 million to spend one night with Diana.
The proposal creates a painful test for their marriage and forces the couple to confront questions about trust, loyalty and the meaning of love.

Redford’s hesitation surfaced during pre-production, according to former Paramount Pictures chief Sherry Lansing.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lansing recalled that after an initial meeting with the filmmakers and cast, Redford said, “I want out.”
She said Redford believed the movie belonged to the younger stars.
“The kids are wonderful, but I’m not. It’s their movie,” Lansing remembered him saying.
Redford’s talent agency helped persuade him to stay, while writer Robert Getchell worked on revisions to the screenplay. With the actor remaining on board, the production moved forward with its original leading man.
Lansing later praised Redford’s performance in one of the film’s most memorable scenes. She recalled how he delivered Gage’s $1 million offer to Diana with remarkable restraint.
“When [he] delivered the line… he just threw it away, as if he was asking to borrow a jacket,” Lansing said. “A bad actor would have paused and delivered it sotto voce. But Redford made it lethal by his casualness.”
Redford’s decision to stay with the film paid off. Produced on a $38 million budget,Indecent Proposalearned about $266.6 million worldwide and became one of1993’s biggest box-office hits.
The film became one of Redford’s highest-grossing films. The movie ranks second among his career box office performers. Only Captain America: The Winter Soldier earned more, collecting $714.4 million worldwide.
Despite mixed reviews from critics, Indecent Proposal remains one of the most talked-about films of Redford’s career. A role he almost abandoned turned out to be a defining film in his decorated repertoire.
