Amassing over 38 seasons since its premiere in 1989, it seems that The Simpsons would last forever — but not according to recent comments by Nancy Cartwright, the voice behind Bart Simpson across 5 decades.
Speaking in an interview on theInside of Youpodcast with Michael Rosenbaum, the host asked the legendary voice actress (and aunt of Sabrina Carpenter, if you want a fun fact), “How long do you thinkThe Simpsonswill go?”, to which Cartwright gave a surprising answer, regarding a rather soon end date.
“40 [seasons],” Cartwright responded.
“You think it’ll stop at 40?” Rosenbaum asked, surprised. “Yeah,” Cartwright replied.
When asked if she was sure, however, Cartwright stated that this wasn’t set in stone. “It’s my opinion,” the voice actress said. If anything, she made it clear that she wants the show to go on far longer than Season 40, which is only 2 seasons away.
“What if they said, ‘We wanna keep going?’” Rosenbaum asked. “Are we still alive?” Cartwright asked of the hypothetical scenario.
“You’re still alive,” Rosenbaum responded. “Would you keep going?”
“Is everybody still alive?” Cartwright replied. “Yeah, we’ll keep going then.”
The Simpsons, named the greatest TV show of the 20th century by Time Magazine, is the longest-running scripted primetime series in American history, having passed the 800-episode landmark earlier this year.
Back in February,Simpsons producer and writer Matt Selman said that “the show isn’t meant to end.” “To do a sappy crappo series finale, like most other shows do, would be so lame,” he told The New York Post.
“So we just did one that was like over the top,” he revealed, referring to episode 769 of the show, “Bart’s Birthday”. In the episode, formerSimpsonswriterConan O’Brienhosts a parody finale for the show, generated by an AI bot named HackGPT. In the faux-finale, Bart Simpsonfinally turns 11, breaking free of the floating Simpsons timeline where characters don’t age. On his journey, Bart goes through every TV ending cliché in the book, from moving away to new jobs, births, deaths, and marriages.
