To say that gamers are excited for the release of the much-anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI would be a massive understatement. GTA V sold through $1 billion in revenue in its first three days, and the sequel is apparently selling so well pre-release that it’s shocking Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick.
Pre-orders for the game went live on June 25th, with two versions available. A standard edition priced at $79.99 and an “ultimate” version priced at $99.99. The more expensive version includes “an exclusive collection of premium vehicles, weapons, apparel, and action threaded across all aspects”.
In a call with analysts on Friday, Zelnick shared his thoughts on the presales.
“I can say that the level of preorders is unprecedented and astonishing, and we’re very grateful for that,” He said. “But they are so unprecedented that we just don’t know how it’ll translate into sales, which is a question I answered earlier. We genuinely don’t, and we just don’t believe in claiming victory before it occurs.”
That strong start helped Take-Two reach a net bookings of $1.39 billion for the quarter, which ran from April 1st to June 30th.
While there was some contention online about the game’s price and the very idea of paying for a product before gameplay is revealed, that clearly hasn’t stopped gamers from opening their wallets.
For those holding out on ordering until they see some gameplay, they won’t have to wait long, as it was announced on Thursday that Netflix will host an “Extended Preview” on August 27th. It should also be noted that the game will be entirely digital, with physical boxes containing only a downloadable code, so there is no concern about product scarcity.

With that in mind, I believe the preorders are a result of the quality that Rockstar has proven to provide in the past. Grand Theft Auto V has sold over 230 million copies and remains one of the most played games in the world. The studio’s latest title, Red Dead Redemption 2, is often touted as one of the grandest video game experiences, from gameplay to narrative. On the one hand, it is a bit silly to order the game so early ahead of its November 19th release date; on the other hand, players have been waiting 13 years for the sequel, so it’s unsurprising that they want to “own” it as soon as possible.
