Twenty-five years ago today, a summer comedy debuted in 3,063 theaters with an R rating, a modest budget, and a cast most moviegoers probably couldn’t name. It finished its opening day on top of the box office and retained the No. 1 weekend spot for three weekends straight. A quarter century later, the money it racked up still looks strange compared to the reviews it received.
‘American Pie 2’ Set a Record Its Rating Should Have Blocked
American Pie 2 arrived on August 10, 2001, two years after the original turned a cast of unknown talent into stars. Universal handed the sequel to director J.B. Rogers and offered roughly triple the budget. It pulled in $45.1 million on its opening weekend and finished its domestic run with $145.1 million, against a $30 million budget.
Worldwide, the sequel raked in around $286.5 million, roughly 9.6 times what the movie cost to make. The 1999 original grossed around $235 million globally, after a domestic run of $102.1 million.
The R rating should have been a ceiling, since it shut out a chunk of the audience the movie was built for. Instead, the opening set a record as the biggest debut ever for an R-rated comedy, beating the $42 million Scary Movie posted a year earlier. It was also the second-best start for any R-rated release at that point, behind only the $58 million Hannibal took in that February. It earned more than double the $18.7 million the first American Pie made in its own opening weekend.
Critics were not the reason. The film stands at 51 percent on the Tomatometer, against a 68 percent Popcornmeter from audiences, with a Metascore of 43. The critical consensus on Rotten Tomatoes is that the sequel lost the freshness of the original and was not as funny.
One thing almost nobody clocked at the time was that the movie is set on a Michigan lake and none of it was shot there. It was filmed across Southern California in late winter, with Paradise Cove in Malibu standing in for the lakefront.
Where the ‘American Pie 2’ Cast Is Now
The sequel brought the entire American Pie cast back and buried a few future stars in the margins.
- Jennifer Coolidge returned as Jeanine Stifler, though IMDb, Metacritic and TMDB all list the role as uncredited.
- Casey Affleck played Kevin’s older brother, 15 years before his Oscar for Manchester by the Sea.
- John Cho had a small part years before Harold and Kumar and Star Trek would make him a familiar face.
- Adam Brody appeared in a small role two years before The O.C. made him a household name.
- Natasha Lyonne had the biggest arc of anyone here, moving on to Orange Is the New Black, Russian Doll and Poker Face.
- Eugene Levy had the longest run of all, appearing in eight of the franchise’s nine films.
The Band Camp Location Burned Down Last Year
The amphitheater in the band camp scenes was Farnsworth Park in Altadena, a 1930s county park on the National Register of Historic Places. It was among the historic landmarks destroyed when the Eaton Fire tore through Altadena in January 2025.
Rebuilding is underway. Los Angeles County announced in late 2025 that two of the park’s three phases are fully funded, with the Pasadena Rotary Club and the Los Angeles Philharmonic putting up money specifically to restore the amphitheater. Work on the first phases is set to begin this year.
