Before George Lucas created a galaxy far, far away, he spent one night cruising the streets of Modesto, California.
That night became American Graffiti, Lucas’ nostalgic 1973 coming-of-age movie about a group of teenagers spending their last summer night together before heading off to college. The movie was released in the U.S. on Aug. 11, 1973, and went on to become one of the director’s most acclaimed films.
More than five decades later, American Graffiti holds a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes, where it’s described as a classic built around hot rods, drive-ins and rock ‘n’ roll. And the music is a huge reason why.
The Soundtrack Was Practically Another Character
Unlike a typical movie soundtrack that might feature a handful of songs, American Graffiti is packed with the sounds of early rock ‘n’ roll.
The movie’s radio is dominated by artists including Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, The Beach Boys and Bill Haley & His Comets, with legendary disc jockey Wolfman Jack providing the voice that connects the songs throughout the night.
Lucas was looking back at the music of his own youth. The movie takes place in 1962, while Lucas was a teenager in Modesto, and the rock ‘n’ roll on the soundtrack helps establish the time and place as much as the cars and costumes do.
The soundtrack was eventually released as a two-LP set featuring 41 songs, and it became a major success in its own right, reaching No. 10 on the Billboard 200 and eventually earning triple-platinum certification.
It Was a Star-Making Movie
Lucas didn’t just capture a particular moment in American youth culture. He also assembled a cast that would become remarkably familiar to movie and television audiences.
Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss, Harrison Ford, Cindy Williams, Mackenzie Phillips and Suzanne Somers all appeared in the movie, with several delivering performances that helped launch or elevate their careers.
Ford’s role was particularly interesting considering what came next. He played Bob Falfa, a cocky drag racer who arrives in town looking for a challenge. Just two years later, Lucas casted Ford as Han Solo in Star Wars.
At the time American Graffiti was made, however, nobody knew the actor would eventually become one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
‘American Graffiti’ Became a Major Hollywood Success
American Graffiti wasn’t just well reviewed. It became a major box-office success and earned five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.
For Lucas, it proved that his nostalgic look back at teenage life could connect with a much wider audience. It also helped establish him as a filmmaker to watch, with the project landing as the fifth highest-rated one of his movies on Rotten Tomatoes. Of course, Lucas’ next movie would be considerably different.
Four years after American Graffiti, he released Star Wars, and the rest is history.
