Ryan Reynolds and Josh Brolin’s canceled X-Force villain actor revealed
Rob Liefeld confirmed Josh Brolin’s villain role in Fox’s canceled X-Force movie. The Deadpool creator exclusively toldThe Directat MultiCon 2026 that Brolin would have played Stryfe. The Cable clone served as the main antagonist in Drew Goddard’s scrapped script.
Brolin signed a multi-picture deal to play Cable after Deadpool 2. Liefeld revealed that the actor was eager to take on both roles. He shared that Brolin told him about his enthusiasm for the dual opportunity. “The opportunity to portray those two characters, the two sides of the coin, being the good and the evil, was something he was really excited about,” Liefeld said.
In Marvel Comics, Stryfe is a clone of Cable created by the Askani Tribe. Apocalypse raised him as a potential host body in the far future. The character has long served as a recurring foe of the X-Force team. Liefeld also revealed that Fox once considered teasing Stryfe in Deadpool 2. The team discussed placing the villain in a post-credits scene before ultimately scrapping the idea.
“There were, at one point, discussions about him being in an after-credits scene in Deadpool 2, but they struck that,” Liefeld noted. Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019 ultimately killed the X-Force project. Goddard has since moved on to write Project Hail Mary and The Matrix 5. He also joined James Gunn’s creative committee at DC Studios.
Brolin’s Cable has not appeared on screen since Deadpool 2 in 2018. Rumors suggest Ryan Reynolds wants the character back for his next MCU project. Marvel Studios is also reportedly developing a new X-Force project for release after Avengers: Secret Wars.
