The latest addition to the Air Force One fleet is a massive Boeing 747 gifted to the US by Qatar.
The plane was converted to an Air Force One-grade aircraft in record time but it had a busy past even before this conversion.
And even though it wasn’t the Qatari equivalent to Air Force One, it still had an important job.
This probably explains the amazing interior.
What the aircraft was used for before Air Force One
Before it was gifted to the US, this Boeing 747 was used to ferry the Qatari royals toengagementsworldwide, with previous passengers including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim Jaber Al Thani.
It was also used for transporting royals on holiday.
Then, in 2023, it transferred ownership and changed registration, but it was withdrawn from use and parked on an island just off the UK.
It wasn’t exactly an equivalent to Air Force One partly mainly because this was sort of a backup plane and not necessarily the only one that Qatari royals used.
It was their Sunday plane, so to speak.
Imagine owning a private Boeing 747 and that’s not even your main plane.
Why this Boeing 747 was converted to Air Force One
After officially accepting the gift from Qatar, the US Air Force spearheaded and accelerated the plane’s conversion to Air Force One for purely practical reasons.
The old Air Force One – also a Boeing 747 – was aging fast.
But the problem was that a new one wasn’t ready, and its completion was still potentially years away.
As a stopgap measure, the US Air Force and Secret Service decided to use this Boeing 747.
In less than a year, the plane was completely disassembled and reassembled with upgraded tech for Air Force One use and repainted it.
One of the reasons why they were able to do it so quickly was that they basically did nothing at all the interior.
Aside from the obvious upgrades for security reasons, the only thing they replaced were the ‘exit’ and ‘lavatory’ signs because they were in Arabic.
