Bond is back. Well, for fans of the books and the smash-hit 2026 video game, 007 First Light,James Bond never left. As news of the next James Bond actor is likely coming before the end of the year, and following the conclusion of Kim Sherwood’s Double O book trilogy with Hurricane Room, a new, exciting Bond adventure is set to launch this fall. Author Charlie Higson—famous for his brilliant Young Bond books—has penned a contemporary, cutting-edge take on 007, called King Zero.
Announced earlier this year for U.K. publication, Men’s Journal can now exclusively reveal that the U.S. publisher for King Zero will be Blackstone Publishing, and the book will be released in hardcover, e-Book, and audiobook on November 17, 2026. Here’s what to know about King Zero, Charlie Higson, and why this is a fresh start for Bond.
King Zero is a new start for James Bond
Although Charlie Higson’s critically acclaimed Young Bond books (which are very good) were set in the 1930s, serving as prequels to the 1950s Fleming novels, his new book isn’t a period piece at all. Instead, King Zero, like the most recent Bond films, is set in the present day and is written as a new start for James Bond. “I’ve tried to combine the worlds of Fleming, be true to Fleming, and the cinematic Bond,” Higson said in March. At the time, he also noted that the influence of the films is just as important as the influence of the books.
In other words, if it’s been a while since readers have taken a look at a new Bond book, or perhaps have never read a Bond book, King Zero will be a great starting place. In his Young Bond series, starting with 2005’s SilverFin, Higson demonstrated a unique ability to drop in Bond Easter eggs without distracting from the story. Those books, and SilverFin in specific, also contain the one element critical to a great 007 book: a great villain.
And so, that seems to be the great promise of King Zero. Because, in addition to being a fresh start for Bond, King Zero‘s title refers to a new Bond villain. Here’s the official description from the publisher:
