This man owned a Cessna 150 for five years and is now revealing exactly what it costs to be a plane owner.
Ilya Strekalovsky admitted that even he was left ‘stunned’ after he ran the numbers.
But ultimately, he didn’t have any regrets about how much he’d spent.
So that begs the question – just how much money had he invested into this plane?
Owning a plane comes with its own set of challenges and costs
Even when you own a smaller plane like a Cessna 150, you can expect to pay some sky-high prices.
Maintenance alone is a big cost, as one American man found out the hard way.
Landing at the world’s busiest airport brings with it quite a hefty bill, as you might imagine.
And then there’s the hidden costs that can take you by surprise.
But for one Russian YouTuber, he wanted to do a thorough overview of the costs that came with five years of ownership.
How much had this man spent on his Cessna 150?
He calculated that he’d spent around 9,829,000 Russian Rubles over five years of ownership.
That’s equal to $119,439.
“When I was calculating [the expenses] yesterday evening, to be completely honest with you, I was stunned,” he told his viewers.
“Most aviators don’t count their expenses because it’s a favorite hobby, it’s a favorite passion, and it’s a huge thrill.”
He even joked that he hoped his wife didn’t view the video.
“[With] that money [~10 million RUB] you could actually buy an apartment, especially back in 2021 when prices were completely different,” he remarked.
A lot of costs factored into the final figure including the initial purchase cost for the 1975 Cessna 150 (3.35 million Rubles / $40,708), and the costs of a hangar (1 million Rubles / $12,151).
And that’s not forgetting transport taxes, certification, and fixing up the engine.
While the costs induced some wincing, it’s not something he has any misgivings about.
“I don’t regret a single ruble spent on this airplane. First of all, it’s deeply interesting; second, it’s pure enjoyment,” he said.
“It’s a hobby that brings pleasure every single day.”
He revealed he was also training to become a flight instructor.
“When training for your instructor rating, you have to learn to fly proficiently both from the left and right seat,” he explained.
“It’s completely different physical control mechanics… the brain breaks a little, and it’s tough to adapt, but for me, it’s an exciting new challenge.”
