The list of directors who’ve made dinosaurs come to life in Jurassic Park is extremely exclusive. Steven Spielberg, of course, leads the list, having done the first two films in the franchise. He then passed the baton to the excellent Joe Johnston for part three. Colin Trevorrow was tasked with bringing the franchise back years later, and made two films in a trilogy, with J.A. Bayona sandwiched in the middle.

The most recent film, Jurassic World Rebirth, was exactly that. A rebirth of the Jurassic franchise, and it came to us from a director who knows a thing or two about giant creatures: Godzilla director Gareth Edwards. Edwards was expected to return for the inevitable sequel but, alas, now he’s out. So who will replace him? In reality, we have no idea. But in our fantasy world, here are 10 directors we’d love to see make the next Jurassic World film, in alphabetical order.

Nia DaCosta

History can say what it wants about The Marvels, but with that film and others, Nia DaCosta showed she has an incredible ability to balance spectacle and humanity. Don’t like that one? How about this year’s highly underrated 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple? That’s another film that has plenty of scope, lots of heart, and plenty of weirdness, too. All perfect ingredients for a Jurassic movie.

J.D. Dillard

After wowing us with grounded, exciting, genre fare in Sleight and Sweetheart, Dillard has largely been in the TV space, playing a huge role in Apple TV’s upcoming Neuromancer series. But at one point he was circling a Star Wars movie. He came up under J.J. Abrams. And his work shows that he can make amazing genre films with almost no money. Imagine what he could do with all the money. He’s got a fresh voice and smart vision that could be great in Jurassic.

Roland Emmerich

Once the king of all blockbusters, Emmerich has focused on (slightly) smaller fare of late, but no matter. If anyone can create an event on the big screen, it’s him. And his penchant for huge, sweeping, marketable ideas is basically just what the Jurassic franchise needs.

Greta Gerwig

Some people on this list seem plausible, at the very least. “Oh, yeah, they feel like a realistic choice.” Others do not, and Gerwig is one of those. She’s working on a Narnia movie. She’s being courted for Barbie 2. And, frankly, she can do whatever the hell she wants and we’ll be there immediately. But she’s obviously insanely talented with a one-of-a-kind voice, and that jump from Barbie to Narnia shows she has blockbuster ambitions to go along with her indie street cred. There’s no doubt her making a Jurassic movie would be incredibly special.

Justin Lin

Tackling a movie as big as Jurassic World isn’t easy. Experience could play a huge factor, and few Hollywood directors have the level of blockbuster experience as Justin Lin. He helmed five out of the 10 mainline Fast and Furious movies and even made a pretty solid Star Trek movie. He’s got vision and the talent to elevate a franchise to another level.

S.S. Rajamouli

Firmly on the “Will almost certainly never happen, but it’s nice to think about it” list is S.S. Rajamouli, the director of the unforgettable action epic, RRR. He’s currently working on another globe-trotting epic, Varanasi, and has his eyes on more RRR too, but can you imagine his take on Jurassic World? Velociraptors flying through the sky in slow motion as Scarlett Johansson swings through the air at them, machine gun in hand. The thought is almost too awesome to bear. Which is why it’ll never happen. But wow, the possibilities.

Andrew Stanton

Andrew Stanton has made some of the biggest and best animated films of all time. He’s also made some of the most ambitious, should-be-way-better-than-they-are live action films of all time. We know he’s got a great live-action film in him, especially because we know his ability to develop characters and tell an incredible story is so strong. He’d make a great Jurassic movie. We know it.

Dan Trachtenberg

If you’re looking for someone to reinvent a popular franchise with a fresh take, look no further than Dan Trachtenberg. The director of Prey, Predator: Badlands, and Predator: Killer of Killers took that franchise and had so many fun, unique ideas that he got Disney to make three of them. Sure, he’s now hanging his hat at Paramount, but this is Jurassic World. We’d love to see Trachtenberg bring some of his trademark originality to this even bigger franchise.

Olivia Wilde

Olivia Wilde is, by far, the most random name on this list, but don’t skip it just yet. She’s made two excellent, hilarious, human indies (Booksmart and The Invite), an ambitious but flawed genre film (Don’t Worry Darling), and is next gearing up for a big, studio blockbuster with the holiday-themed Naughty. Those don’t all scream Jurassic, but add her experience as an actor in some of the biggest films in the world, along with her ability to explore great characters and situations, and it would make for a very unique, very satisfying Jurassic entry.

Edgar Wright

This one almost makes itself in your head, does it not? Wright has long focused more on his own original ideas, and we love him for it, but this year’s The Running Man showed something else. It showed that Wright can take a big brand name and still put his unique visual and tonal spin on it. His Jurassic movie would be stylish; it would be electric… it would almost certainly never happen. But dare to dream.

And of course, those are just a few people. There are plenty of “it would never happen in a million years” options. People like Christopher Nolan, Ryan Coogler, or Denis Villeneuve. There are also lots of much more plausible options, like a David Leitch or Tim Miller. These are just ones we think are really fun. How about you?
