The Season 3 finale of House of the Dragon put brothers Aegon and Aemond Targaryen face-to-face after their clash at the Battle at Rook’s Rest. However, their much-awaited reunion surprisingly did not end in the elder sibling striking down Vhagar’s rider in revenge. In a recent interview, showrunner Ryan Condal explained Aegon’s decision to spare his brother’s life.
Ryan Condal on why Aegon didn’t kill Aemond in House of the Dragon Season 3
Speaking at a press conference, Ryan Condal recently revealed that Aegon showed restraint toward Aemond due to the journey he has been on since their previous encounter (GamesRadar+).
“That would be no fun,” the veteran television writer noted. “He has learned a lot in Season 3 here, Aegon. And even though he’s still angry with his brother and has agendas, I think what he realized in his evolution is that he does deserve a lot of the things that happened to him, probably in some way, and had to learn how to be a better king, and perhaps that…he needed to be away and walk amongst the people as a pauper.”
In the House of the Dragon Season 3 finale, Aegon arrives at Harrenhal after discovering that his dragon, Sunfyre, was still alive. There, he corners Aemond and confronts his younger brother for trying to kill him in Season 2. Nevertheless, instead of taking Aemond’s life for the betrayal, Aegon recruits him for his mission to secure the Iron Throne and even suggests that he might forgive him one day.
Condal continued, “I think if Aegon had shown up and just killed Aemond, it really would not have marked the growth in the character. It’s him seeing Aemond’s change, and then realizing where he is standing with his dragon, and suddenly this incredible wind of legitimacy behind him…he’s experienced a messianic return. I think it would ruin and spoil that for him to kill the person that’s potentially his greatest and strongest ally.”
While House of the Dragon’s fourth and final season does not have an official release schedule yet, fans can expect it to come out sometime in 2028.
