Head coach Unai Emery says Aston Villa will not be at “our best” against Paris Saint-Germain in the Super Cup 2026 and has dismissed talk of the Europa League holders rivalling some of the richest clubs in the Premier League.
Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, defender Ezri Konsa and striker Ollie Watkins have not travelled with the Villans to Salzburg for the game against the Champions League winners as the trio recover from the World Cup while their teammates build towards the new top-flight season.
“If they were here, maybe we would have more chances,” said Emery. “If we are comparing with teams like Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool or Arsenal, we are competing with them but we don’t have the power yet.”
Aston Villa: Why Emery downplays Premier League standing
In Emery’s three full seasons in charge, Villa have risen from top-flight also-rans to two fourth-placed finishes either side of one in sixth place.
The Spaniard guided them to the Conference League semi-finals and Champions League quarter-finals before winning the Europa League in style last season.
Despite that success – and finishing above Liverpool and Chelsea – Emery endured two difficult spells in 2025/26 when Villa failed to win any of their first five matches and took nine points from 10 games between January and March.
“We achieved the objective after a very difficult season,” reflected the 54-year-old. “In August, we had a very difficult moment.
“One thing I appreciate is to be happy with the way we are doing [things] – don’t compare us with other teams or clubs.
“Sometimes they are over us, sometimes they are under us. Keep going, keep being resilient in bad moments, like we showed last year.”
Super Cup 2026: PSG ‘favourites’ vs Aston Villa
PSG are the most feared team in Europe after becoming European champions in consecutive campaigns but Emery says lifting the trophy would be “a special moment”.
“I am looking forward to playing,” added Emery, calling the match a “test” against opponents he regards as “favourites”.
“We are having a good pre-season. [This match is] very important for our careers as a coach, as players, as a club – it’s a trophy.
“It’s one thing that can make us proud of how we are and how we got here. We can have a huge motivation to achieve our best.
“[The] 6,000 supporters from Birmingham give us the responsibility as well to try to play for them. We are going to compete.”
