Chelsea head into the new Premier League season with genuine optimism after one of the busiest summers in their recent history.
A disappointing 10th-place finish in 2025/26 ended any hopes of European football, but it also prompted another major reset at Stamford Bridge.
The club turned to Xabi Alonso, whose impressive work at Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid made him one of the most sought-after coaches in Europe, with the Spaniard tasked with restoring Chelsea to the top end of the table.
Alonso has wasted little time stamping his authority on the squad. Chelsea have spent heavily once again, but unlike previous windows, there has been a clear emphasis on adding players who fit a defined tactical identity.
Morgan Rogers arrived from Aston Villa in a club-record £117m deal. Valentin Barco strengthens the midfield, while Maxence Lacroix adds much-needed pace and athleticism to the defence.

Emmanuel Emegha provides another option in attack, with highly-rated youngsters Marco Palestra, Denner and Dastan Satpaev also joining as part of the club’s long-term project.
Experience has also been added. Jordan Henderson arrives after leaving Brentford, bringing leadership to one of the youngest squads in the division, while Danny Welbeck offers proven top-flight quality and another experienced voice in the dressing room.
There are still questions to answer. Chelsea conceded too many goals last season and consistency has remained elusive despite significant investment.
But for the first time in several years, there appears to be a coherent footballing vision behind the recruitment.
Whether that translates into an immediate return to the Champions League remains to be seen.

What do Chelsea need before the window closes?

Despite the scale of their spending, Chelsea could still strengthen in defence.
Lacroix improves the back line, but losing Trevoh Chalobah reduces depth and Alonso’s tactical approach demands defenders who are comfortable defending large spaces as well as building from the back.
The bigger priority may simply be trimming the squad. Chelsea once again have a bloated group, and several fringe players are expected to leave before the deadline as Alonso looks to create a more streamlined dressing room.
One to watch at Chelsea
Morgan Rogers.
The England international arrives carrying the weight of a British-record transfer fee, but he also looks perfectly suited to Alonso’s system.
Capable of playing through the middle, off either flank or behind the striker, Rogers offers power, creativity and ball-carrying ability that Chelsea lacked at times last season.
If he settles quickly, he has every chance of becoming one of the Premier League’s standout attacking players.
Prediction for Chelsea in the 2026/27 Premier League

Chelsea should improve significantly under Alonso.
There is finally a manager with a clearly defined tactical identity and the quality of the squad is undeniable.
The lack of European football could also prove a major advantage, allowing Chelsea to focus solely on domestic competitions while many of their rivals juggle continental commitments.
A title challenge may come a season too early given the volume of new arrivals, but Chelsea look well placed to return to the Champions League places.
101 Great Goals Prediction: 4th
