Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly opened discussions over a deal to sign AS Monaco star Folarin Balogun, as per French outlet L’Équipe.
After coming through Arsenal’s youth system, the 25-year-old struggled to break into Mikel Arteta’s starting line-up. So, he went out on loan on a couple of occasions to play regularly and develop his career.
The USA international showed glimpses of his qualities for Stade de Reims during the 2022/23 season, making 24 goal contributions in 39 appearances across all competitions.
Following that, it was thought that Arteta might integrate him into the squad, but Arsenal ultimately decided to let him join Monaco permanently in 2023.
Initially, Balogun took time to settle into his new surroundings before showcasing his goal-scoring prowess last term, scoring 19 goals and registering four assists in 42 appearances across all competitions.
After showing his qualities in club football, Balogun impressed on the international stage with the USA, scoring three goals in four World Cup matches.
Now, L’Equipe state that with the player’s existing deal set to run until 2028, Monaco might be open to cashing-in on him this summer. Several English and Spanish clubs, including Newcastle United, have been closely monitoring his situation.
Balogun to Tottenham
However, Tottenham have started showing intense interest in recent hours and have held discussions to finalise the operation for a fee of around £51m[€60m].
Balogun is a striker by trait but can provide cover on the flank if needed. He is quick, strong, good in the air, can hold up the play, possesses the poacher’s instinct inside the box, and also works hard without possession.
The forward is a talented player and is currently at the prime stage of his career. Having previously played for Arsenal, he is familiar with the Premier League’s physicality.
Therefore, Balogun might be a shrewd acquisition for Tottenham should they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually manage to secure his services before the start of next season.
Meanwhile, Tottenham currently have Dominic Solanke and Richarlison as options to deploy in the CF position, but the Brazilian has entered the final year of his current contract.
