Swedish manufacturer Koenigsegg has taken the covers off the new Koenigsegg CCGT1, a car that pays tribute to the CCGT GT1 race project of the 2000s.
That car never raced, as the FIA shut down the GT1 series, but the CCGT GT1 project showed what the company could do.
They’ve now taken this a step further with the new CCGT1, a supercar that the company says has the highest performance of any car they have made so far.
Some incredible mods have been made to the car to make it race-ready, and only 70 of these cars will be produced and they are all already accounted for.
Is this new Koenigsegg CCGT1 road-legal?
Yes, despite its track credentials, this new Koenigsegg CCGT1 is a road-legal car.
However, its main focus is very much that of the racetrack, and it certainly has the power to be a track monster.
Under the hood, it has a 5.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, producing a huge 1,280hp.
That, however, is on standard fuel. Should you run the new car on E85 biofuel, power can increase to 1,600hp.
It is easy to notice the aerodynamic appendages on the car, which started as a CC850 supercar.
The new active rear wing, for example, has 30 degrees of rotation to increase or decrease drag as required.
All of the new aero components combine to produce 800kg of downforce.
Koenigsegg’s new transmission is game-changing
Perhaps the part of the car that would have caught most people’s eyes is the new LST-based Sequential Shift (KSS) system.
“The ambiance of a race car,” said Christian von Koenigsegg in the car’s announcement video.
The new transmission system features an actual clutch pedal for launching off the line.
But when up to speed, the ignition cuts for clutchless shifts.
“Just like in the original CCGT,” said von Koenigsegg.
If that isn’t what you want, then the ESS six-speed manual from the regular CC850 is also available as an option.
The highest-performance Koenigsegg so far
With so much power and downforce available, the company says this is the highest performance car it’s ever made.
“This is something truly special – our first creation that’s designed deliberately as a track-optimized circuit scalpel as well as an extraordinary daily driver,” said von Koenigsegg.
The car also includes the company’s first-ever optional, factory-designed track package.
This package includes slick tires, a carbon fibre roll cage, racing seats, air jacks built into the car, and more.
Yet after throwing it around at a racetrack, you can still get in the car to get home.
That sums up the duality of the supercar manufacturer.
What car is the Koenigsegg CCGT1 based on?
The car is based on the CCGT GT1 project from the 2000s.
This car was designed for GT1 endurance racing, with the covers taken off the car in 2007.
Back then, the car had over 600kg of downforce and just over 600hp for racing.
The car reached the testing phase, but just two months after this, the FIA pulled the plug on the GT1 rules.
These basically prohibited the CCGT GT1 from racing, and thus we don’t know its full performance potential.
